A handful of men search for rare, expensive, and delicious white Alba truffles deep in the forests of Piedmont, Italy.

That’s the write up but this documentary is so much more. I found it on Starz and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It’s in Italian with subtitles. But worth it.

The relationship between these old men and their truffle hunting dogs will bring a tear to your eye.

Really well done. Really funny in a dry way at times too.

I’m surprised they aren’t using pigs.

I looked into growing truffles a few years back. An established 5 acre truffle orchard could produce $3-500k worth of truffles per year.

Ultimately we didn't think my land drained well enough for truffles and it would have been an expensive gamble.

Pigs find them naturally, dogs have to be trained. Pigs will eat the truffle, dogs won't.

I’ve seen European truffle hunters with trained pigs on leashes. I had no idea there were truffle dogs until this thread. Makes sense. Some of the truffle hunting pigs I’ve seen were huge and there is no way they could be restrained from eating the truffles if they decided to so do. Lol

Truffle SpeciesCommon NameAvg price per ozAvg price per lbAvg price per kg
Tuber MangnatumItalian White Truffle$211.64$1581.67$3386.24

The average weight of a white truffle is between 30 - 60 grams (1 - 2 ounces). The largest white truffle ever recorded was found in Umbria, weighing in just over 4 pounds.

At those prices a pig that eats too many truffles is going to become bacon.

The truffles I wanted to grow average $350/lb. An acre of orchard can yield 50-100lbs per year. Selling your crop usually isn't an issue, most of the truffle orchards have a single buyer who buys as much as they can produce. The guys in the show are hunting wild truffles.

Watch "Pig" with Nick Cage... I was surprised...
I just watched this and to say I hated it would be an understatement. I kept waiting for him to go john wick on their asses.

If someone stole an animal that I loved as much as he loved that pig I’d have beaten them half to death.

And when the guy who was behind said he’d turn her into bacon I’d have knee capped his ass and then cut off his hands. Make bacon now bitch.

No, he makes the butthole dinner and then cries and goes back to his cabin and listens to his dead wife on tape while he prepares to keep hunting truffles by his self. Weak.

What do Truffle Hunters think if the movie PIG starring Nick Cage?

I HATE Nic Cage, other than Raising Arizona, but I really enjoyed that movie. Truffle hunting was really just background for the story though.

I put white truffle oil in mashed potatoes, a little goes a long way. But that stuff is crazy expensive.
Oh…..my god. I finally ordered some white truffle oil and made mashed potatoes tonight

Where has this been all my life. Good lord that was delicious.
