I'm sure a number of y'all read my post about losing a deer last weekend. It had me shaken up and, most importantly, strategizing about what to do about it.

I picked up a SEEK Compact XR thermal camera. Delivered today and popped it on the phone. So far, I'm happy. I could have spent a bunch more money on clearer resolution and more features, but this one will likely do what I'm asking it to. That is, show me a warmer-than-the-air body lying on the ground.

Went back and forth between this one and the FLIR One. What won me over to the SEEK vs. FLIR....FLIR REQUIRES an internet connection. As in, it won't work without calling the mothership for permission before turning on. So...out in, I don't know, maybe the woods, where you don't have strong cell or WIFI? You're screwed.

I had my boy (4', 70#) stomp out into the little patch of woods behind the house and try to hide. I was able to easily pick him out at up to 80 yards or so.

One complaint that I knew going in about this model is that it's slower than others to process. I noticed this when the wife and I took a walk. I could easily pick out major heat sources while walking. But if I wanted to try picking out a squirrel or anything that's only slightly off temp from ambient, then I'd need to stop and scan an area steadily for a few seconds before shifting to another area. For my purposes, the $$ savings made more sense than getting the faster/clearer processing.

It weighs nothing and comes with a nice hard sided carrying case. It does seem to eat battery life though.

Seek also makes an inexpensive handheld.

Yup. I almost went that direction. Essentially the "guts" of what I got and the handheld are the same. The phone adapter was less expensive, though I'm risking Apple changing up their Lightning connector (not that they'd EVER do something like that!). It's also less bulk/weight in my pocket.

Lets us know how it works. I've considered one (not that one in particular), and the blood tracking lights. But have heard mixed reviews on both. It would be nice if the tec is up to the task. I've got some really think cut overs around me and had to get lucky and trip over deer to find them.

The delay in picking up the heat signatures is something that is just part of a lower end TIC. The original ones we got in the fire service back in the mid90's were terrible about that. Now the ones we have you can scan much faster. The problem with them for your intended use is the $$. The new ones we use are in the $4-10 k range. It does seem like a good thing to have I might look into buying one like you got. @Tim

I've got one as well (for android), I didn't get the XR, which has a narrower focus. It DEFINITELY helps track, have recovered two deer much faster because of it. Even when relatively light out, a big yellow blob on the thermal beats a little bit of brown fur among the leaves.

Only downside is that it will suck down a battery. I am thinking of getting a cheap second phone (or tablet) just for that.

Why not get an AR mag sized power pack with tons of mAh and a long cord? Stick the pack in a mag pouch and run the cord to the phone.
