Honeywell RTH9585WF

Anyone just have these “go bad”? Woke up this morning, it was off/blank. Pulled it off the wall, it was kinda warm. 28.1 volts between R and C wires as prescribed by Honeywell troubleshooting. Do I need to just buy another thermostat? This one’s only 3.5 years old.

Should have a 5 year warranty if you have receipt or the installer can take it back. If not they go to the manufacture date. Now remember any thermostat will have to be programmed to your type of unit- gas, electric, heat pump, and a number of other items. Usually only the place that it was bought at will let you return it for exchange or credit.

Congratulations on using a meter to find the exact issue.

It looks like perhaps two of the 3 capacitors that are sticking out of the rear may be swollen. That means they are bad. Those caps are likely in the power supply section of the thermostat. If you got it in 2019, you should be able to get it replaced.

It was very warm when I pulled it off the wall.

The lowes statement says it all.

I walked into a heating and air supplier once to look for a better product, and they looked at me like I had two heads. Apparently, this heating and air stuff is like some kind of secret society only for members.

There's a d&l supply in Rock Hill. If that's close enough to you. Figure which one you want. Let me know. I'll get one put on hold, and you can swing by, pay for it and pick it up.

I really appreciate it! I only had to run up to Gastonia for work today, so I stopped by Lowe’s in Lake Wylie. Their system said they had 4 of these, they couldn’t find them. Went back by Lowe’s in York and got the same model. I really didn’t feel like rewiring a new one. I remember the damn calculus/trigonometry/algebra problem that was for me. X wire, Y wire, if crows fly at night hook the green and yellow wire to XC, just damn. So I got the same one, snapped it on there and wallah, fixed. Taking other one back later for warranty.

On a side note, we built this house in 2019, and I replaced both electric motors in the “things” in the attic that blow the air (squirrel cage fans?). Didn’t last the first year. What a PITA that was.

I’m no expert on the zillions of models of thermostats but I would assume it may recognize some aspects of the system being a smart tstat but did you not have to tell it what kind of system you have connected to it? You say you just plugged it up to the old base and it’s running but I would think at least you would have to tell it if it was a furnace or heat pump and enter the WiFi information and save.
