On helluva man. This is what the American male used to be. One look at that chest would make the snowflakes run screaming for their safe spaces and coloring books.

Read something interesting about him that I didn’t know. Seems he preferred the M1 Carbine over the Garand. That’s what he carried for most of the war and he swore by it. Gives me a whole new level of respect for that little gun!

Guess it never struck me before that the bronze star => silver star => DSC ribbons go, respectively, mostly red => mostly white => mostly blue.

From wiki

Suffering from what would today be described as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Murphy slept with a loaded handgun under his pillow. He looked for solace in addictive sleeping pills. In his last few years, he was plagued by money problems but refused offers to appear in alcohol and cigarette commercials because he did not want to set a bad example. Murphy died in a plane crash in Virginia in 1971, which was shortly before his 46th birthday. He was interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, where his grave is one of the most visited.

I used to watch that movie at least 10 times a years back in the 70's in my ute. One hell of an American and a damn good actor too.

Maybe this is why he liked the m1 carbine.
Murphy enlisted on 30 June 1942 in Dallas. During his physical examination his height was recorded as 5 feet 5.5 inches (1.66 m) and his weight as 112 pounds (50.8 kg).

There was more to it than that. He said it never failed him. I think that, being the warrior that he was, if he thought anything else would have served him better he'd have used it.

This guy makes most boys today look like vagina hat wearing pussies.
A good friend of mine is a retired csm (command sergeant major). He was a fellow paratrooper, even though he was a pog.
We have had conversations about the 'kids' that wear the uniform today.
His opinion of them is not so good.
I counter with 'these are the kids that volunteered after 9/11. They are bearing the brunt of the GWOT.'
I have a lot of respect for these kids that serve multiple deployments. They could just as easily 'not volunteered'.
So no. Not all is lost.

He was only 46 when he died, wow. Was reading about his many exploits. A couple stood out... That's is some bad-assery right there.

After landing on Yellow Beach near Ramatuelle, Murphy's platoon was making its way through a vineyard when the men were attacked by German soldiers. He retrieved a machine gun that had been detached from the squad and returned fire at the German soldiers, killing two and wounding one. Two Germans exited a house about 100 yards (91 m) away and appeared to surrender; when Murphy's best friend responded, they shot and killed him. Murphy advanced alone on the house under direct fire. He killed six, wounded two and took 11 prisoner.

The Germans scored a direct hit on an M10 tank destroyer, setting it alight, forcing the crew to abandon it. Murphy ordered his men to retreat to positions in the woods, remaining alone at his post, shooting his M1 carbine and directing artillery fire via his field radio while the Germans aimed fire directly at his position. Murphy mounted the abandoned, burning tank destroyer and began firing its .50 caliber machine gun at the advancing Germans, killing a squad crawling through a ditch towards him. For an hour, Murphy stood on the flaming tank destroyer returning German fire from foot soldiers and advancing tanks, killing or wounding 50 Germans. He sustained a leg wound during his stand, and stopped only after he ran out of ammunition. Murphy rejoined his men, disregarding his own injury, and led them back to repel the Germans. He insisted on remaining with his men while his wounds were treated.
