if you want to understand the basics of crypto, or blockchain, or "bitcoin."

This is simple, straightforward and clear.

Blockchain has value because of its UTILITY ONLY (what it does). However, this is true of most anything to which we assign value. Food, bullets, gold, salt, whiskey, even giant stones..... all have assigned value SOLELY because you can use them to DO something, not because of some nonsensical idea of "intrinsic value." Nothing except God has "intrinsic value."

I think crypto is slated to become phenomenally valuable because of the USES it may provide.

Before you give your opinion, you should become informed (imagine that! what a novel idea! lol). I think that the uses for decentralized info recorded is vast, and destined to rework our entire order. Maybe this vid will provide some basis for why I think that. I hope so.

Whether or not you agree with this, and decide to invest in crypto (you can guess my choice here), you owe it to yourself to understand what is happening and why all the hype is happening....., and there is no question that crypto is becoming mainstream.

This is an excellent ground level explanation, although I wrote in the notes that his wikipedia illustration was a bad one (you can scroll down in the notes to see my comment if you wish)

Hope it is helpful

Let’s put it this way, if the “official books” of the US dollar were block chain signed and held in distributed multiplicity, things like Uncle Jerome at the Fed bailing out hedge fund cronies to the tune of six trillion dollars by “printing” it overnight wouldn’t be possible.

Tans, the vid helped clear a lot of the fog surrounding bitcoin/crypto. The State monitors bitcoin, are there others that are stable and not monitored by Big Brother?

The IRS has put out a "bounty" of $600,000 to anyone who can break the Monero/Lightning platform, which is a crypto platform dedicated to complete privacy. Rather than be threatened by it, the crypto community in fact scoffs and sneers at it, with good reason.

The reason there is this vague association of "bitcoin" with criminality is that the first transactional uses of BTC were on the silk road, and usually went to drugs. Expect the gov people to harp on that, as they have a lust and fixation on bringing all financial activity (and consequent taxation) under their observation and control. I don't expect they will win this one, any more than the old USSR fought the proliferation of information transfer via the fax machine. Once the genie is out of the bottle, they can do lots of damage (and they will!) but ultimately they lose....., at least that is the current flow of history.

Sorry. With coffee and the bible (fresh off both this a.m.!) my mind has an incorrigible bent to abstract from a simple question like the above and swerve into a more abstract background of powers, evil, human psychology etc etc. It is just a part of who I am, but rather than delete all that, I just left it up as a display of how freaking weird I am! lol

Anyway, the answer to your question is that Monero, (on the lightning platform) is unable to be tracked. I dont' have time to chase down a good introductory tutor on that for you, but I have confidence that you are a bright guy and can noodle around and find more info. I will try to get to this later.

I have been afk on the board a few days as my daughter (Meredith, the one who is mentally challenged) had a pretty intense psychotic break and we have been trying to keep things together around here. Will try to keep things updated and get you some more info on Monero.

so, how does one actually buy in to bitcoin?

Let me see if I can get you a vid. It will be later today. There are three domestic exchanges I recommend. Bitstamp and Coinbase are very simple. Kraken is better if you are going to trade it, but the process is more difficult. Let me see if I can get you something, or in the mean time, if any other cryptoheads in here (there are a few) want to post in this thread, they can. The big question is more "how do I secure my assets once I have bought them." If you don't actively trade them, but just buy and put them away, you can actually keep them offline, which I would recommend. Again, let me see if I can get you a simple and straightforward step by step process. It will be later today as I have lots going on this a.m.
