Getting into the suppressor game. I like to see if I can get my deer rifle, Ruger American Compact .308, barrel threaded so I can install a mounting break/device that the can will mount to. Not really sure where to start, who to talk too, or what to expect. Assuming this barrel can be threaded what would I expect it to cost?

Cost at class3machining.com is $100 for shortening, threading, and crowning a barreled action. You’d have to cover shipping to Texas and back. Maybe $30 each way. Turn around time is usually a week or so. If your barrel is already a good length for you then it’s something like $75.

I couldn’t find anyone local that was close on cost or even in the ball park on turn around time. Things may have changed. I haven’t looked recently.

If you're near Clayton, Rob at Clayton Guns can get you hooked up.

One issue is that barrel may not be big enough to leave enough of a shoulder for the suppressor mount to sit against. 308 will be threaded 5/8x24 most of the time. IIRC the minimum shoulder for SiCo suppressor mounts in .720. I know some gunsmiths will do some engineering to get around this. Give your barrel a measure at the muzzle and see what it is. @Joker00 may be able to shed some light on this

Yep it will require cutting back to barrel to get it large enough.
Also being it will be 150.to 200 to have it threaded just sell it and get the American that comes threaded.
Light weight barrels can in most cases for 308 can be threaded in 1/2×28 but I do not like that route. May ended up needing a threaded shoulder added to it or add a fixed adapter to it.
They thread the barrel.1/2 28 then black locktit a larger section to it that they thread 5/8 and add a shoulder. End game is it looks like a factory barrel that is larger on the end.

I'm assuming you have a sporter profile barrel. If so then the muzzle can be threaded 9/16x 32 which will give you the minimum of .100 thousandths of wall thickness since the depths of the threads are more shallow compared to 24tpi.

Once threaded. An adapter can be used. There are 2 types that will take it from the 9/16x32 to 5/8x24 tpi. I've done this on many rifles where people wanted cans on their hunting rigs.

Instead of spending $300 on a cutting, threading, freight, and adapters, there’s frequently Rem 700 SPS 308s for sale on here that you’ll be about halfway there price wise and you’ll have a heavier barrel that’s already threaded. Just a thought

I think I paid about $150 for my threading to be done, but would question why to do it for a hunting rifle. You can buy an inexpensive hunting rifle with a threaded barrel already if you really wanted it, but I found that putting on a rifle-rated suppressor on mine (Thomson TC Compass) made it ridiculously long. Also, your rifle will be taken apart to get it done properly, and putting it back together can have issues (headspace in my case).

I've thought about that, but I kind of like this little compact rifle. Spent the last couple of weeks in Cali with an acquaintance of yours from TFM. SFC Riley.

Last time I saw him he had a major beard going on…Christmas time. Took the wife and kid to a candlelight service with my dad and ole Riley was there with his people.

Check Amicks Guns out by the Columbia Airport. They do threading work

Was this a qualified gun Smith? And it's no extra to take a few inches off to compensate for the length of the supressor. Keeping it legal of course. Setting headspace is no issue at all. Comparing the cost of having the rife threaded to a new rifle will save hundreds.

Yes, qualified and recommended. But sh1t happens I guess. I will take it back to him at some point.

But- looking at someone's example above- you could get a second rifle for the cost of threading the existing one. I bought my ruger, with a threaded barrel from a forum member for $300.

Agree to disagree. 130 bucks for threading and an adapter is cheaper than another rifle of the same grade for 300. I can also fix your headspace issue that you are having that you mentioned.
