Three Marines Found Dead in Hampstead

CO is colorless, tasteless and replaces O2 and binds with your hemoglobin. I had a friend who was a volunteer firefighter that climbed down a ladder into a tank to rescue someone (who was already dead of CO) and by the time he reached the bottom of the ladder he passed out and died too. That was many years ago and no one thought about a respirator at the time. They figured the guy in the tank may have had a heart attack or something.

CO poisoning is awful. We see folks with it when we have periods without power--ice/snow event, hurricane, etc.--and they do something like bring their grill inside. Victims of house fires from time to time. Some do well, some do not.

Older couple had a generator running outside, too close to an open window, the furnace pulled in the exhaust, woman survived because she was on O2.

I know CO is odorless but auto exhaust is not, and it’s really hot. Seems like they would have smelled and felt that before they passed out.

I still think the CO poisoning is a little suspect, but reading about exhaust leaks into the cab I can see how this is plausible.

Assuming this is true and that’s how they actually died, this is the ONLY way I can see it playing out that would convince me there wasn’t anything suspicious about it. They’re down in Wilmington doing some partying then decided to head back to base and pulled in to the gas station in Hampstead to “sleep it off” before having to drive through the gate onto Lejeune. Everyone is good and boozed up so they passed out with some AC running and never woke up.

People have died from Co poisoning from sitting on the wrong end of a boat.
In the mountains people get stuck/snowed in their car, and this happens all the time.

Odd factoid: search was initiated when one of the LCpls' mothers notified the base that her son didn't arrive on a flight home for a funeral. Doesn't sound like at least one of them should have been where he was when found.

From one report:

"The Marine had been scheduled to be on a flight to Oklahoma the night before but had not arrived. Hampstead is about halfway between Lejeune and Wilmington International Airport."

Maybe his buddies were taking him to the airport when things went wrong. Whatever happened, it's a sad loss.
