Just getting into Tig welding and trying to find the most economic way to get a tank of Argon. Don’t need a large tank just gonna be using it for small jobs. Any help would be appreciated.

Call your local welding gas stores and they'll give you prices on what you need.

I see tanks on craigslist and offer up quite often.

I use arc3. They don't care what gas is in the tank that you take in for exchange

You can rent bottles from a welding supply place and they have multiple sizes for you to choose from. If you buy a bottle and exchange it at a welding supply make you that you tell them you own the bottle.

What do you have to transport the bottle? Even a 150 isn't that bad to lift into a truck bed by yourself. I occasionally have to carry them up stairs at work. Planning on purging anything? Doesn't sound like it but just want to check because you'll definitely want a bigger bottle if so. I can't remember what the fill rate was the last time I took our company bottles to get filled, but I seem to remember that the price to fill a 300 is very close to the price to fill a 150. Not sure what the bottle rental would look like.

Short answer is just go talk to your local welding supply. They'll explain the bottle sizes and what their rental/fill rates are.

150 is the biggest customer owned tabk. The 300 is a lease tank and totally not worth the $$ unless 3 to 4 per month is needed

Yeah if he buys a 150 then it definitely wouldn't be worth it. I was just saying that the fill price isn't much different, so if the rental price of a 150 isn't much different than a 300 then it might be worth getting the 300. It also depends on what he's actually wanting to weld. If he's purging anything then I'd definitely say 300. If not then no need for a 300.

I deal with these welding supply stores daily. My point being. Noone will sell or lease him a 300

Are you planning to weld aluminum, or just mild steel? If aluminum, you will want an argon / helium mix. For everything else, pure argon.

As others have advised, stay away from small cylinders. You will pay much, much more per cubic foot for the gas and it won’t last as long. A 125/150cf owner cylinder is you best option.

ok. Pure argon is your best bet then. What TIG welder did you get? Does it have both AC and DC?

I'd bite the bullet and just buy a 150CF tank from Arc3. They have branches in Dunn and Sanford. I checked the Raleigh craigslist and unfortunately no used tanks currently listed.

For a price comparison, here is a new 150CF tank with the Argon valve for around $300 shipped to Lillington, NC.

If Arc3 is close in price, I've found it best to support my LWS (Local Welding Supplier). The folks in Sanford are very helpful and always have provided me with great advice when I run into problems.
