Any way, new to AKs. When dealing with tight magazines should I grind the magazines or the rails? or is it a combination of the two? Anyone know the preferred width of an AK magazine to clear the wobble rails?
.
ETA: I have don e zero research on this, so yeah. I'm that guy.

Brother, put down the Dremel and step away.

NEVER permanently alter a gun just to fix a single temporary mag. What's your AK and what mag(s) are you trying to use?
WASR10. Even the mag sent with it is snug. We're talking less than 2mm on either side.

Is there a "milspec" width for the magazine width ?

They typically loosen up after use. As long as you can get it in there at all I would not worry about it.

I had a mag that would not go in no matter what I did. It was definitely out of spec or something. Yea, it got dremel'd. Works good now 😊.

I would not ever dremel the gun.

I'm for sure going to grind the mags. I was hoping someone would tell me that the expected width is 24.1MM, or whatever it may be. So if the rails are way thinner than that, i might touch them.

No idea on the "spec". I think AKs can be a bit more loosey goosey with that kindof thing than ARs. How tight are we talking here with the mags? Can you get them in at all?

AK specs can be all over the place, especially if your wasr was imported as a single stack and opened up by the importer. AK mags can also widely vary. If they fit in with "some" effort, just keep using them until they break in. If a bunch of mags don't fit at all, I'd consider reaching out to the importer.

So after some research, I found some technical drawings of the magazine specifying a width of 25.97 mm. But that might be original AK47. AKM is apparently a little narrower? On my particular rifle, the distance between the magazine blocks is 24.9 to 24.7 mm depending on where I measure. The particular magazines I got were from AIM surplus, Croatian origin I believe.

They measured 25.3 mm. There's the problem. So, I sanded off the super thick paint and squeezed them in a vice down to 24.5 mm. The top edge of the magazine was also very square, so I filed a bevel on that edge to help with them getting hung up on the blocks while inserting. Also, one of the mags was .2 mm too long front to back, so I had to take a little off the back on that one.

After the vise squeeze, the right lip on the magazine ended up a little too low and left resulting in either the bolt catching on the magazine, or failure to feed from that side of the stack. I bent that lip up a little with some pliers and that issue was solved.

Sounds like a lot, but it only took maybe 30 minutes for all three.

So now I have three mags that fit the rifle and work properly on the bench. We'll see how they do at the range, I don't expect any problems.

If its doing it with ll your mags just get out a die grinder with a sanding cone or stone and relieve the rails a bit. Sometimes theyre just off from the factory. If its just some mags I'd suspect cruddy mags. Korean?

I think Croatian. The US Palm it came with fits well, just a little snug.

Those Croatian mags are widely, widely, widely known for fitment issues. Some folks will inevitably chime in that their Croatian mags have been fine. That's fine. But there are tons of reports out there of poor fitment issues, including from me.

I would ditch them altogether and get some regular ol' surplus steel mags. Arms of America has regular deals on Romy AK mags.

Range report. All the mags functioned flawlessly. Here's the first 9 shots. I loaded 10, but the first shot was not shouldered in case it blew up. Not bad for an AK fired from the shoulder at 50 I guess. At any rate, the mag functionality was the important thing and they all dumped 10 with zero issues. I would have stayed longer, but the guy with the big bore AR with a brake made it uncomfortable to stay.
