So I recently joined the 1911 Club and I figure I would give my quick review and experience. I haven't shot a 1911 in a LONG time, and I've never owned one. Never really seen the point, but was always open to the idea. With the Tisas 1911s blowing away the internet for an inexpensive 1911, I decided to wait on a sale and get one. I had been eyeing the clone of the WW2 Remington-Rand, but those late night BST trips always lead to opportunities. So I purchased a .45 to keep my favorite 45 company.
I didn't really want a feature-filled 1911, but the Novak sights really sold me over GI-style. Plus, if I have a bobtail 1911, someone may mistake it for an Ed Brown and think I'm more classy. Trigger is really good, ambi-safety has a good detent with no flopping, grip safety is smooth, and G10 grips (that I personally don't care for). It was ANIB, so I cleaned it and got it ready for a range trip with my G45 today. Local shop was out of FMJ .45Auto, so I had to settle for S&B 230 JHPs to go with the Magtech 230 FMJ. It came with 2 Mec-Gar 8-round magazines and the seller also tossed in a Kimber & Wilson 8 rounder.
First two magazines at 10 yards. The top three were me finding out where to hold
After finishing that box, I moved on to the JHPs at 15 yards. Here is a 50 round target.
My POI lowered, but don't know if it was the ammo (less likely) or extra distance combined with mediocre shooting skills on my end. Regardless, a better 1911 shooter would easily shrink these groups.
Points of Interest:
* Not sure how I feel about the bobtail cut. When I present, it really wants to cant to the left. If I bought another 1911, I doubt I would purposely get a bobtail.
*The FMJ worked pretty good, but did have a couple FTF with the Kimber magazine. It's a fairly well used magazine, so I leaning towards it being worn. Probably will send it to Ed Brown for exchange.
*The JHP was a pain in the butt. There was feeding issues, especially when loaded to 8 in the Mec-Gars. I know JHPs can be iffy and really I don't expect a 1911 to run anything except 230 FMJ.
*The grip screws started walking under recoil. Tisas really needs some lock washers from the factory. I cut a couple O-rings to fit for make-shift washers to stop it. Think these grips are going to be replaced with some checkered walnut grips
*Passed the 10-8 of ejecting a full magazine without shells dropping down out the magazine well. Ejection is brisk, but a little erratic. May need to adjust the extractor some.
*Fit and finish overall is really good.
*I didn't leave any idiot marks.
*I also spent the day trying to NOT ride the reset on the Stingray and G45. Kinda weird at first, but overall I think Ben Stoeger may be on to something.
Overall, a good experience for my first personal 1911. Not sure how invested I'm going to get with it since it's the only .45Auto firearm I own. Plus I probably need to order a big pack of Checkmate/Wilson/CMC magazines. Not going to lie that I still preferred shooting the G45 after I was done with the Stingray, even without the nice trigger.
Thanks for reading my blog, hit that like and upvote, and say hi to your Momma and all them.
