I have just acquired a very well built storage building / workshop that is 14’ x 28’. Both the roof and walls are lined with a kind of thin foil radiant barrier ( TechShield). My plan is to heat and cool the shop with a mini split type unit.

Question is; do I really need to add further insulation before finishing the walls and ceiling with either sheet rock or some other kind of boarding ? I am hoping the radiant barrier and airspace might be enough to keep the temp inside from either extreme end of the scale

Heat transfer can be measured three ways - emissive, reflective, and passive. Tekfoil (shield) is only effective against emissive and reflective heat - not passive.

By all means you are better off to insulate that building with either spray foam or fiberglass batts in addition to the Tekfoil.

Thanks. That’s what I thought but didn’t want to do anything unnecessary, especially at current prices. Looks like my next project as I just had the electrical stuff put in

So long as we're spending your money, you absolutely should insulate. What you have would be fine if you were not going to condition the air at all; it would keep your shop from getting hot due to the sun hitting it, but if you are you'll be trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon unless you insulate.
