Make no mistake, the Winkler's are fine pieces. I've owned a few and he knows what he's doing. It's just not the task they are made for.

In the vein of what I "THINK" @abraves is vibing, I'd like to offer the suggestion of looking at "Hardcore Hammers".

The one below is mine. Picked it up at the Blade Show in Atlanta back when they were just starting out.

It's an awesome woods/camp tool.

When I was "rolling heavy" for the day of rage last week, yeah, had my usual pistols and threw a long gun in too.

But, my Hardcore Hammer was laying in between the gear shifter and the 4wd shifter within easy reach.

Processes wood like a champ and makes a HECK of a weapon too!

I think that is exactly what Iā€™m looking for. After all Iā€™m in the construction industry and have need for stuff. Probably gonna order this in the morning. I love this forum. So much knowledge.

Honorable mention to Council Tool axes and Hatchets. Made in NC and made well.

There are a couple riding around in the back of the Suburban and another couple in the Jeep.

This is the first gransfors I bought. My biggest problem with it is that as soon as I touched it I wanted another one. Now I want them all!

It is really small. I almost wish I had gotten one with the same head and a slightly longer handle. This one fits very nicely in a pack though. I absolutely love it. Crazy sharp.

My younger son is big into edged items and we bought him a Woodman's Pal years ago for Christmas and it was a total piece of garbage. The steel is way too soft, the edge chipped and rolled easily and I believe the whole blade bent the first time he used it. I think the blade was made out of hot rolled steel without any hardness.

That OD green one is the heat!
Do you have any experience with hardcore hammers axes? I wouldn't mind having an axe with a short handle. They have one with a 28" handle. Went camping this past weekend and I was splitting some wood with an Estwing hatchet and wishing I had something a little larger. Below is what I have.

Sorry, I don't.

Any thoughts on a short axe for camping. We camp with my truck pretty close. This isnā€™t something I would hike in. Iā€™m too lazy to do that. This question is for anyone.

Made in NC
Look at the Boys Axe

Love my Cold Steel Plains Hawke. It's a real deal get the job done kind of hatchet not some fluffy pretty boy call of duty junk. For serious use go for functionality not coolness.

Although if someone were simply looking for the "Cadillac" of hatchets/axes, as @C-doodle mentioned above, that would be Gransfors Bruks, followed by Wetterlings in a close second (if they are still being produced, not sure, some rumors a while back about closing).

Utilitarian awards go to Estwing and surprsingly enough Gerber and Fiskars. All 3 can be great contextually but somewhat soulless (Glock analogy time again).

And there is a lot of nice stuff in between all those.

What do you think of Hults Bruks?

Council tool Hudson Bay axe.
One rides in the back of my suburban for camping and hunting trips. It's light and fast and cuts bigger than it ought to.
