Too bad the twist rate is 1:9 and it likes 69 grain bullets

I bought this Remington 700 .223 with 5-R 1:9 twist barrel at Ed’s Guns in Vass. It was barely dirty, and I hoped it would do ok, once I pulled it out of the nasty Hogue rubber stock it was bolted to.
So far, I am not disappointed. Out to 600-700 yards, it is an accurate rifle in the chassis. Once I wear this barrel out, I’ll get a heavy, fluted 1:7 twist Krieger or Bartlein barrel installed, and be able to use heavy vld bullets.
Too bad that Remington went belly-up. They had some good products. A 0.355” group at 100 yards, off the bipod, allows for quick hits on steel at goodly distances.

Along those lines, I have a "1 in 9 twist" Savage with a .223 Rem chamber (not .223 Wylde) that absolutely loves the Hornady 73gr ELD bullets over Varget or TAC. The 73gr is designed to be seated at standard magazine length of 2.260in mch like the SMK 77gr.

I have 73 ELD’s. I’ll try them loaded long with Varget. The AICS type mag allows long OAL, even if it is a Magpul plastic. Unlike the metal mags, these feed 100%.

I run the MDT polymer mags in my other .223 bolt gun that has a 1 in 8" twist and wylde chamber; IIRC 2.550in is MAX OAL with them. If you can run the 73's long it usually works out well in my experience.

Ruger american predator 73gr eld over tac 2.312” oal just touched the front of an asc steel mag. Was not zeroed for this ammo just shooting for groups.

I’ve got an SBR AR that will shoot a 3 inch group with anything but these weird and hard to find, I want to say 72’s?

With those it’s an absolute tack driver.
