It's all a matter of attitude.
I agreed to take a former coworker's son to the range after he bought his first gun. The guy ended up also bringing his three girls - 20, 16, and 14. The 20 year old wouldn't try anything except a .22 revolver. The 16 year old ran through all of the 9mm ammo I brought. And finally, the 14 year old was a natural with a 1911; I had not intended for any of them to shoot my .45, but little sister spied it in my range bag and begged to shoot it.
