Train (Amtrak) Travel as Option?

You can't fear if you're barely sentient enough to eat ice cream or walk.

we have taken Amtrak and Megabus to DC and back several times.
we booked waaay in advance and got excellent prices.
advice:
1. for Amtrak, bid on first class. it is worth it.
2. for Megabus, the big windows up front make it too hot in the summer. sit further back.
3. for both, book the earliest departure. zero-dark-thirty. less problems. that goes for air travel, too.

When I worked in Boston MA rode the train an hour each way Monday to Friday for 7 years. It was great, had a nice nap each way. Also did not have kids the 1st 5 years so the 10 to 12 hours each day that I was gone wasn't as much of an issue.

Also rode Amtrak from CT to SC once. It was OK. Having ability to get up and move around, restroom, snacks.

Still I prefer to drive my RV if over 4 hours. If less take the car.
