The previous owners had a trash compactor installed many years ago that no longer works.

I was going to take it out but I don’t know if I want to have a huge opening in the kitchen. Anyone have any experience fixing these things? I already have a small beverage fridge under the island so no need to add a second one

It won’t turn on. I have made sure the plug has power and the machine is plugged in but after that I don’t see anything obviously wrong with it.

I’d appreciate if you share whatever you learn.

No experience with trash compactors, but if it were mine I'd pull it out and use my trusty multimeter to check the power cord through the switch, then the motor to be sure they're good. And that there is, in fact, power to the receptacle.

A trash compactor isn't a complex device, though I'm sure the newer ones have been complicated more than necessary with a control board that would cost a pretty penny to replace.

Otherwise, pull it out and put a cabinet in its place.

Last exp i had was with one that did the same thing. Not work. Didnt want the hole either and didnt feel like building a cabinet in there. It became the recycle holder before the big bin outside. Paper grocery bags fit perfect.

Personally id trash it and either cabinet or a rolling cart that will slide in there to hold things.

I had considered an ice maker in the same spot or just removing it completely. The problem with removing it completely is the floor under it is unfinished. When we moved in we have the floors sanded and restrained because the previous owner bought some cheap stain from Home Depot to finish.

We have a KitchenAid compactor. It’s 16 years old and we use it everyday. We’ve never had a problem with it.

Ours has a feature that, if activated, will keep the compactor mashed down on the trash, and will not retract or do anything until you raise up on the foot pedal.

Most common are closed door switch and drawer safety switch.

1. Using a meter check receptacle for 110 or more volts.
2. Unplug, pull closed door toggle switch out and remove wires. Place meter on continuity and on the 2 prongs. Push in switch. Meter should show switch closed with a reading. If it does put it back in and place wires back on.
3. Pull out drawer. In the rear is a safety switch tha is normally open contacts (passes no power). Pull out switch and disconnect two wires. Check switch same as door switch.
4. Selector for on/off is tested the same way.

Repeat. These are unplugged from power easy test.
