Found a stand that was well on our land, hunting direction was facing deeper into our property. I knew instantly who it was and texted him and shot him a message on FB letting him know he had 24 hours to move it. I am petty enough that I will go out there tomorrow in any weather and remove it. He response was “he though he was on his property, and that he would take it down”… there were some other lies but it still pisses me off. Calling the game warden that I know(he works this area) and making him aware as well.

Caught a "neighbor" on our property. Actually, I heard a shotgun on the back side of our property and got in the truck to go down that road. As soon as I turn the corner, I see a white pickup across the road from my property, parked on an unused portion of driveway. As we approached I see a man standing back from the road behind the truck, like he's waiting on someone and he's open carrying. I know it wasn't him shooting, so there's someone else in the woods. I ask if this was his property, referring to the section he was parked and standing on. He says yes. I tell him I heard shooting on my property and I wasn't happy about that. He seemed to know some history of the area, like who used to own my property 2 owners ago, but not the owner preceding me. I looked around, saw no other vehicles and asked it that was his truck. To which he replied yes. Uh-huh. Talked a little more, and bit him farewell. Then immediately call our neighbor on that road to validate information. She tells us, he's not who he says he is. Jim would not be out there doing that. He's not healthy enough. But, she has seen the white pickup often at Jim's mom's house, which is the land across the way. She then sends a picture of Jim. That's not him, but there's a family resemblance. Haven't seen him since.

Anyway, that's a long story to say, it pisses me off when people lie to me like that. Don't come on my property unannounced and don't lie to me when confronted.

Before I sold my farm, I would find stands on my land. I'd take them down and leave a note on the tree telling them to call me if they wanted to claim their stand. I probably took down a half dozen stands over the years and never had anyone claim them.

Let me add, I think the OP is a big man handling it the way he did. I was just saying what I would do. Particularly if I knew who it belonged to. He would be welcome to come pick it up in person, with an appropriate apology and promise it won’t happen again.

A few years ago, I had a similar experience. Stand on my land, within view of the purple striped trees. Y’all suggested I call the Game Warden who came out within a few days. What really pissed me off is that the positioning of the stand indicated they were shooting towards our house. 🤬

You got deer round your house, yo?

Here is what bugs me (rant warning):

I get it that hunting is fun. I enjoy it. Most of us do. But is a bit of meat >really< worth all of the sneaking and tomfoolery that goes on? Seriously…we have grocery stores. You ain’t starving. Stop being Mr. Sneaky Tresspasspants.

On top of that, what happened to just…I don’t know…asking? Yeah, much of the time people might say “no”…but why not just see a nice spot of land, look up the owner, grab a bag of bojangles biscuits and knock on the door? “Good morning, I saw you have a nice stretch of land back here, would you mind if I hunted it? I brought you a biscuit just to thank you for your time regardless.”

Yeah, I’m sure a lot of folks would say no, but when you find someone who says yes you may just find a new hunting buddy.

WOW!!! In S.C. ALL private land is considered POSTED whether signed or Not.....The standard answer here is ....WHY I didn't know this was your land!!!

My reply is always the same...........You knew damned well it wasn't Yours!!!
It would be nice if NC did the same. Evidently a person in NC can go on your land unless the land is legally posted or unless you have already told that person to stay off your land. That makes it a bit sticky for the landowner because a stand on unposted land is legally allowed to be there, and tampering with it could have consequences for the landowner. The landowner could be charged with destruction of private property, theft, interfering with a legal hunt, and perhaps a few others. Removing the stand, putting up a few posted signs near where it was, and leaving a note that tells where the person can retrieve the stand should not get the landowner in trouble. Nothing has been destroyed, nothing has been stolen, and no hunt has been inconvenienced since the person cannot legally hunt on your posted land without your written permission. Been there, done that.

Simple trespass is one thing. But putting a hunting stand on my property raises all kinds of concerns that I, as a property owner, shouldn’t have to be concerned with.

I am extremely cautious about where and who I hunt with. I do not hunt public game lands for this reason nor will I go into them during hunting season even dressed head to toe in blaze orange.

I shouldn’t have to be concerned with getting shot on my own property by an idiot who shoots at noise without identifying his target.

When I used to hunt a friends farm that only he and I had permission to hunt on we were extremely aggressive with found stands and blinds on his land for this reason.

As was said by someone else they were removed and destroyed or sold. There was a good sheriff in the county so we would also call him and describe each one we found.

After about 10 or 12 we didn’t find anymore.

Know what pisses me off about these folks?

They’ll sit there and watch a flash mob on tv, breaking out store windows and cleaning the store out. They’ll sit there and beat their chests, saying, “Somebody oughta be waiting and shoot those folks when they come through the front!”…

But then, they’ll knowingly and willingly trespass on land that ain’t theirs, then, have the damned gall to put up stands/structures?

MFers…what ya’ll are doing is NO different from the thieves/looters! 😡

The land has to be posted in order to need written permission. Perhaps they have changed that law. I hope so. If they have, please let me know.

I did not know that they changed a law recently that can have a significant effect on some people. Brunswick County no longer allows spotlighting for deer from public roads. I can still spotlight or hunt coyotes on my own roads.

From my recent conversations this has changed if you do not own the land you have to have written permission to be allowed to hunt it. He doesn’t own(obviously) the land doesn’t have written permission therefore he is trespassing and it is not a legal hunt.

That would be great. Where can I see that in print? Is this for a county or for all NC?
