I carry at all times but with all the BS that's going on I want to add a long gun. It will be kept in my trunk, locked. Looking to keep it around $300 if possible. I think a Ar pistol would be great but don't want to leave something worth $$ in the car. I'm thinking a Ruger charger pistol, cheap shotgun or similar. No Keltec 2000, I don't deal with keltecs ;) any advice would be great .

Here is my trunk gun. It's a Marlin 336 in 30-30. Not an evil black rifle but something that will still get the job done. It wears a butt cuff so we have a reload on the gun. I took some of the plastic shell carriers from factory ammo boxes and cut them down to five rounds for a speed loader type ammo carrier. I have a ammo bag that I can throw over the shoulder to we can load out a couple of hundred rounds should we need them. Only paid $250 for the gun so not a bad deal.

Didn't think about this! Not a bad idea. Good power, smallish package and I could get one in a pistol caliber if need be for a higher round count. Hmmmm

I've always thought a good SKS would make a solid trunk gun. No magazines to keep up with. Potent round. Accurate. Relatively inexpensive. And, most importantly, a bayonet for if you need to open an MRE or stab someone in the face.

At the ranges that it would be deployed you meed not worry about optics. Most people would recognize it as a hunting rifle and not as an assault rifle. But it will get the job done. If you handload you can talor some bullet profiles. Just pull factory loaded bullets and replace with projectiles of your choice.

Im with Grits part of the way. I don't know what you can find them for now but my tractor/mower/farm gun is an old (pre-Freedom Group) Marlin .357mag carbine I picked up off the used rack. It was pretty shabby but the I love it so much a couple years back I sent it out to Robar and had them ugly it up good with a RoGuard finish. That little carbine has logged many miles and with the RoGuard it does not need babying and is slick as goose crap. It was maybe 10 or 12 years back but I think I gave $300 for the carbine because I felt sorry for it and knew it need love. The damn RoGuard was more than the carbine (I think $450 for their complete works) but I have had more compliments on what a nice utility carbine it is. The .357mag in a carbine length barrel gets a little extra umph. Mine in about the same length overall as my AR, weighs about the same .... maybe even lighter, carries 9 in the mag and at 50 yards even with my aging eyes I can hold a group you can pretty much cover with your hand.

ETA: it will also take 11 .38special nicely or .38wadcutter which are puff rounds near .22lr feel.

I have a T53 for this job. It's powerful and damned near disposable. Keep 4 in the mag, 5 on a cuff and 30 more on stripper clips in ammo pouches attached to the sling.

A lever action in a pistol caliber would be nice but you take the opportunity that presents itself. I haven't stumbled across that one yet but tommorow is another day.

Ok, I have thought about the lever action for the car too. I have a 44 mag that holds 10+1. Seems like that could be a nice self defense option. My question unfortunately is about the law. Aren't long guns supoosed to be unloaded? And if so, then a lever with no bullets takes some time to load and reload. While a gun with a magazine loads and reloads very quickly. There are good things about the lever, but I haven't gotten past the loading and reloading issues. Theoretically of course. Outside of price the takedown Browning BLR's seem cool. But low capacity mags and a $1k truck gun isn't ideal either. My mind keeps saying basic cheap AR with iron sights. Especially with the way prices are going these days.

I'd just do an AR pistol since the ATF says you can legally shoulder a KAK brace now. Knowing crazy people these days, someone may be recording, but no worries about deploying an AR pistol given you can both legally shoulder it and since it is a pistol, it can be concealed and within reach.

At one time, I was hesitant to carry it in the vehicle, but the thought of needing it and not having it overrode the concerns of having it stolen.

Keep my AR, cased, in the cargo area, but I am giving serious consideration to relocating it.

I've been looking at the under the seat options for my truck. I know there are some for the back seat.

But the KelTec Sub2K would be better lol.

Lol ya the sub2000 is pretty much perfect for this use but Keltec screwed me good a few years ago so I won't buy another one.... I did have a sub2000 at one time that I loved but a buddy offered way more than I payed for it so it got sold :)

This. I got a 8.5" 300 Blk upper and pistol lower from PSA that I may have all of $350 in that I keep in the truck. It has been 100% reliable and is fairly accurate.

This. Just make it in 300blk or 9mm. 5.56 sucks out of a short barrel, you'll do more damage to your ears than the BG, lol.

Also you should rethink the Sub2K, they are very reliable and almost perfect for this application.

Another option is a HTA bullpup stock on a 10/22. Compact and will put out a lot of rounds quickly. Ammo is cheap and light enough to carry hundreds of rounds on foot.
