Got this Universal M-1 from a relative who didn't have the time/space for it. No word on what happened to the barrel, looks like it got hit by a truck or something. I think it goes without saying the barrel needs to be replaced, any recommendations as to where I can get one? Also the heat shield and magazine are obviously missing but I'm not too worried about those until I do something about the barrel. Worst case scenario I got a free M-1 that could look nice on a wall. And since I'm hoping to go into gunsmithing maybe I could get some experience working on it.

I have straightened barrels with a hydraulic press enough to get them shooting again. Just did a Winchester 62 that was bent in the last two inches of muzzle a couple of months ago.
If you have the patience and time, it can be done at minimal expense.
This is not a precision rifle anyway.

When was the rifle manufactured?

Turn it into a wall hanger and make up an awesome story for it.
Yep, something crazy like bigfoot grabbed one night … to something more believable like a black bear chased you and you bent it over his head as he was coming up the tree after you. Just depends on who you tell it to and how many adult beverages you’ve had.

The trick is patience. Just put it away and sooner or later one of a few things will happen. You might find a barrel or more likely a barreled receiver for it. Alternatively you might find a gun that needs something that is good on this one. Maybe you run into someone who has one that's damaged and he needs your parts gun. In any case the best bet is to patiently wait and see what happens. Pushing to get it done now will only make the project cost too much.

Or he could sell it really cheap….

…..to me.

Finding a replacement barrel will be tough. Attempt to straighten the existing barrel, sell the gun for parts, or make it a wall-hanger.

Another unique option would be to convert it to the "enforcer" pistol version. There's a parts kit on gunbroker right now. Probably some NFA paperwork/hoops to jump through, but it's an option.

Yeah, I'm a pretty patient guy and storage space isn't much of an issue for me so I'll probably go this route. Not in a hurry at all

Very easy to change out a barrel, Numrich use to have them and so did CMP. Ive done about 9 barrel swaps all went smooth. As noted above the Enforcer was a Carbine with a 8 inch barrel, the SLA (Patty Hurst fame) used that and a 32 cal CZ scorpion. Just get a barrel and fix it up.
