US sub with caterpillar drive...

Lol, Clancy was the first thing I thought of when I saw your thread title.

Seems like the guy had some good sources 😂

How could that not have been classified at the time though?!

Years ago I read that Clancy got called in for some of the things his books talked about.
He showed them where he found all the info in public sourced publications.
It's all out there, you just need to look and put 2 + 2 together.

I guess so!

And the other thing is that when the military openly acknowledges a 'new' tech, it seems like it's really already been in use for a couple decades or so...

Come on guys. USS Montana?!?!

And if that didn’t give it away…
“USS Montana is expected to undergo sea trials on the Penobscot River in Maine. This will make it more difficult for the Russian Navy to observe the tests.”

You boys need to brush up on your Red October bits.

Can any bubbleheads comment on this, legally? I was under the impression that on our nukes, the powerplant itself is the main source of noise now which is why the diesel electrics of the Nordic nations continue to slip past our defenses during exercises?

Just some trivia here-the last YouTube clip is at the end of The Hunt For Red October-and the scene was filmed by a 2nd unit on Western NC's beautiful Lake James. Being 2nd unit and blue screen, neither Alec or Connery were in the area of course. Unlike the Last of the Mohicans where all the major players spent a good long time here in the area.

The sailors on board are the main source of noise.
Cooking, cleaning, trash ops, careless handling of tools.

The same river from the book/movie where they hid the Red October from Soviet spy satellites 🤣

This was a well done April Fools

USS Montana was a nice touch too.

Not a bubblehead but I was an acoustic sensor operator on P3s from 89-93, flew many hours on top of Soviet nucs and countless US/Allied boats.

I’ve been out of the game a good long time, but auxiliary machinery was what we tracked. The reactor itself doesn’t have any moving parts, the pumps and generators, etc are what make noise.

SSs are quieter while running on batteries because the electric motors are very quiet along with the generators. Each new generation of diesel boats got quieter and quieter. They’re mainly used in littoral areas and tend not to venture far from home.

Things could have changed, this is just my experience.

Thank you for the info. My last boss had many an hour in the P3s but flying ice forecasts in the arctic. yes that was my understanding as well the diesel boats do not have the legs the nukes do.
