Reading @tanstaafl72555 's thread about sealing coffee got me to wanting another food sealer. I had one a couple of years ago and it didn't last long. What is a good brand that isn't crazy expensive?

Also, do you guys prefer the bags or the roll and make your own size bags?

We use a Weston pro 2300.

We had a food saver but duty cycles put a major delay in processing and sealing bulk meats. No such issues with the Weston.

I've got a Nesco VS-12 that I've been using for a couple of years. I prefer the bag rolls as well. I've had 1 bag break, and that was because I didn't take care of the pointy end of a bone, and then froze it. I also use it for sous vide cooking, which is awesome.

This is what the little one got. We buy bag rolls in a box now with a little zipper cutter on them. Makes bag making easy.

You happen to have any info on that box with the bag roll?

I have a regular ol' foodsaver that works okay, with the exception of the wait times between sealing. I wouldn't mind upgrading.

I like making the custom bags from a roll, but again, the foodsaver slows down even the bag making process. We were gifted some premade bags, and although they cut down on the prep, it limits the portions you want to bag.

Wevac 11” x 150’ Food Vacuum Seal... Amazon product ASIN B096MBL1GJ

Another foodsaver customer. Mine is plenty fast for 3 or 4 bags, then the waiting kicks in.
Mostly use rolls, but I did buy some premade vac friendly heavy mylar bags that are working well.
I don’t double seal and so far no fails on meat or dry goods.
I also use the ball jar lid attachment and keep some dry goods in jars.

I think you have an opportunity to define expensive here lol. Quality is priceless sometimes.

We have had a Foodsaver for a couple or three years now and have no complaints. I'm not familiar with the waiting time that others mention. Maybe I don't seal enough at one time for that to happen. I did about 8 bags in a row a few weeks ago and it didn't slow down at all.

We are not going to use it daily. When we find a deal on something in bulk it would be nice to split it up. I wouldn't want to spend $400-$500 on one that we would use now and then.

I have had a Foodsaver I bought at Target about 10 years ago and it has been great. Use it a ton. Just bought a newer version for the cabin. I do not think it is as good, but it sure looks fancy. When one of them dies I’ll probably go high end and pricey since I use them a lot.

Weston makes an 11” home model. It’s a mini version of the one @hp468 and I have. I’d check that one out. It has a bag holder on the back and everything lol

That one looks like what I was thinking about. Thanks.

Only time I've had duty cycle issues with my foodsavers was when I did a lot of bag making. I double seal, so my routine was...seal-seal-cut......seal-seal-cut.....seal-seal-cut.....dozens of bags.
That's the only time I've had to deal with it, and I typically have plenty of related things to do, without taking a step, till the machine resets, which is only like a minute.

Good to hear all of the positive food saver accounts because I’ve been on the fence about buying one from Costco, on sale for $75.

I have one from Costco we bought probably 5 years ago or so. I'd say it gets used on average monthly, sometimes a few times a month. Still going strong.

I have used a Cabela's commercial grade sealer for over 10 years with no problems. I have no idea who made the thing but it works great.
If you don't have a lot to seal cutting your own bags is the way to go, but if you have a lot of sealing to do at one time get the precut bags.
Cutting and sealing your own bags takes twice as long as using the precut ones.

Thanks. That’s about what my usage will be, 1-2x/mo, 3-5 bags each time. Not planning on doing marathon bulk sessions.

We've been vacuum packing food for 20+ years. We've gone thru, at least, a half dozen Food Saver vacuum packers. In 2017 we bought a 15" Cabela's commercial grade vacuum packer and it fits our needs quite well. For @Jerzubbie's needs, the Food Saver will probably work just fine. I also agree with @bondjamesbond that, if you are doing high volume vacuum packing you should be using the precut bags. I use mostly 8"x12" precut bags. With the 15" wide cut to size bags, I can seal and freeze a whole Boston Butt.

Anyone with the 11” Weston Pro yet? Wondering if it’s worth the bucks over a FoodSaver for what I’m looking to do. Looking to mostly bag ammo for storage and flatten/portion out wholesale club meat purchases for better freezer fit.

Check/compare the duty cycles. Our Westin (not the 11”) will run circles around a food saver. If you have a lot of meat to seal up the food saver will need cool down periods (or they used to anyway.)

That said, I’ve been exposed to a chamber vac now….. pure ruined now.

I guess thats part of the question. How quick do you run up against the duty cycle sealing two ends of a bag?

I’m sure it depends on the model but with our old food saver somewhere around 10 bags (IIRC) back to back put it into a overheat/cool down mode.

Not a big deal if your putting up a lb or two of at a time but we frequently purchase 40-80 lb of chicken/sausage/beef etc and the time it took to process bulk was absolutely painful.

Thanks, I’m only looking at 3-4 pounds and a few steaks typically.

I bought this one during a BF sale for $99. I’ve almost gone through the first roll of bags, and have no complaints about it for my light usage.
The bag cutter and double seal are great. The cord stores in the bottom which is a nice little touch too.

Idk what the 11” model costs but either would likely suit your needs. Just compare specs and see what works for ya.
The 11” can be had for around $200 right now.

I need to get a new one - the old Food Saver no longer gives a tight seal. (heh)

All I see of your post is the ol' Tabula Rasa... no link, etc.

What brand/model so I can look it up ogle it online?

Wish it wasn’t so far. I’d jump all over it 🙁

I have a newer one. I don't like how big it is.

The older model foodsaver 550 is what I want. Can be gotten on ebay for about $30.

I personally think they are better before they came out with 14 different models that all do one thing, suck.
