Sad, we got our latest dog from Peak, nice folks.

Wake County Animal Center Policy Changes affect YOU

Effective 01.02.2024, Wake County Animal Center (WCAC) unilaterally changed two policies that significantly reduce the services Wake County residents have historically received through that shelter as follows:

  1. WCAC will no longer take in owner-surrendered pets from the public; and
  2. WCAC will take in stray animals from the public by appointment only.
Peak Lab Rescue is extremely concerned that these policies do not serve public health, public safety, county taxpayers, or animals in need. We encourage you to seek out local leadership regarding these community needs that are no longer being met.

If you are are Wake County resident, contact the following to provide feedback or complaints:

Thank you for your support as we continue to navigate the new reality of animal welfare work in our community.

Effective Immediately, Peak Lab Rescue is closed to intakes.

The immediate impact on Peak Lab Rescue of these WCAC policy changes is an increase in owner surrender requests from three or four per day to an average of 40 per day. We are also OVERWHELMED by requests from individuals who have taken temporary possession of dumped and/or stray dogs that should legally be in the care of Wake County Animal Center.

We have responded to the community by increasing the population of dogs in our care by 100% in January. This is not sustainable.

A pause in intakes will allow us to adjust resources to better meet the needs of at-risk dogs throughout our service area. Thank you for your understanding.
How YOU can help:

Attend our Adoption Event THIS SUNDAY and bring home a new best friend....OR sign up to foster at peaklabrescue.com/foster

Shortly before we moved to NC we tried taking in a feral kitten. It didn’t work out, to put it bluntly. In the end, we left it in our apartment with plenty of food and water, etc. It had been really problematic from the word go, but we tried. We came back late at night to find that it had crapped no less than 30 times all over the floor. A day or two later, it got surrendered to Guilford county and I sensed three days later when it passed.

We also got one of our lab mixes from Peak.

40 owner-surrenders per day seems crazy high. I realize a lot of people get dogs and don’t think about the day to day responsibility and, for others, life happens, medical issues happen and they feel that’s the only option, but 40 per day for a single county??!

People really are garbage. You know most of that 40 is animals that got old/sick/more than zero work or cost to have and then get dumped. Or were a distraction for kids during covid and aren't needed anymore. Or they have a kid on the way so they immediately ditch a dog/cat that had the misfortune to be a placeholder for their filthy spawn because who can take care of two things?

I want my terminal cancer project list amended. I want pedos AND people who just ditched dogs for being an inconvenience.

On board with all the comments here. I'm a big animal lover and hate the thought of it. Yes the numbers are crazy high-more than the average person thinks about. Our county animal control used to have to humanely destroy (I know...almost an oxymoron) over 5,000 dogs and cats a year. I wrote most of it up to the "country" mentality that SO prevails here-you get a dog or cat and just let them run wild, and many didn't spay or neuter them. I KNEW the number was high, but actually going to the shelter to visit co-workers for various reasons (having lunch or gun-trading with my Animal Control buddies usually) really brought it home. One day many years ago I met a buddy to do a gun trade right as he was closing the shelter and I couldn't help but notice the bed of his full size long bed truck was almost level full of carcasses going to the landfill... 😢 The Sheriff begged the county to take this from under his authority and they did, bringing in staff that were pushing "no kill" policies. I'm all for that but the numbers are now where near allowing that for now. SO sad! Like some of you have said-its PEOPLE! 😡

Getting a dog is a commitment to another life, do all you can to make it work.
We’ve the sweetest, dumbest dog I’ve met & she respects no boundaries. It’s tough to stop a determined 90lb Rottie from climbing on you, or a kid. For years my wife has wanted her rehomed, I’m concerned she be abused, so the twit stays.

When the economy goes bad people dump pets too so they don‘t have to buy food or care for them. When the 2008 debacle hit somebody dropped 2 mini dachshunds in our neighborhood. Luckily a girl that worked at a dog rescue saw them and took them in. We made a donation to the rescue and took them both. They were great family members.

The .gov isnt getting enough .gov money to support all the morons who believe they are dog breeders and selling puppies out of totes in a car at wal mart or their yard.

I love my pets. Loads upon loads of people aren't like us all and they are crap humans esp concerning pets.

There is no good solution here other than forcing people to be responsible. .Gov programs tried that already doesnt work.

A side effect of people dumping dogs is they'll find each other and form a pack. Then they'll hunt for animals to eat, including people. This is why we have animal control as a county service.

A side effect to dumping cats is they'll wipe out the bird population. They're unsurpassed as hunters in the current ecosystem of surburbia.

If the universe was properly run, they would go back and eat the people who dumped them.

If I were rich enough, I would retire and buy a gigantic farm and turn it into a pet rescue and sanctuary. All dogs and cats would be welcome and cared for, to live in a safe home until it’s time to cross the rainbow bridge to the big farm in the sky.

Since we're judging people we don't know here, what's your opinion of the following?

I knew a lady that absolutely loved animals. Loved them to the point that she took in stray dogs and housed them at two of her properties. Loved them enough that she raised a family of possums that she found in a trash can. Loved them so much that she finally quit her job (that she didn't need anyway) because she couldn't stand walking by the meat counter.

When she died, instructions were left to euthanize her dog (he was old, but healthy), cremate him and put his ashes in the coffin with her.
On a scale of normal to crazy, she’s bat-shit crazy.

More local govment retardedness which will lead to the last ride to the "train station" for unwanted pets.

40 owner surrenders a day?!?! good lord.
"Pandemic Puppies" aren't so much fun when they are grown and you have to go back to work.

Probably layoffs aren't helping.

I detest the ones that "have to move" and can't take the dog with them. You abandoning your kids too because you have to move?

I'd abandon a filthy demanding brat before I'd abandon a lovely pupper.

You've got opposable thumbs you cumpet, use them. Doggo needs my help.

Wait, whut?
No kidding, reads like a TOS violation. Especially given the next sentence says doggo

And an odd comment...my wife named an old Mercury Sable of hers Crumpet.

It's a dismissive slang term for a child. Keeping cum as a pet.
Hahahahahahaha, that's what I thought it meant. Just wanted clarification.
And to be perfectly honest, that's how they're treated by some sperm donors / recipients.
