But maybe I was lucky.
I just got two PPPs. This is my first contact with the Wake County Sheriff dept.
It took 3 days to get an approval (online) and about an hour at the office.
It would have taken less time at the office but there was a bit of a line.
The lady was very nice and there was no charge for the mental health signature certification.

The permits actually say that I have satisfied the Sheriff that I am of good moral character. Fantastic endorsement— I think 🤔

The guy with braids that was in front of me has me concerned about what kind of idiots are applying for PPPs.
The lady told him that she couldn’t give him his PPP because the address on his license was not the same as the one on his application.
He responded with …. “Oh, I brought the wrong license.”
She looked at him — Like Really? and he said that he had recently moved. She tapped on the computer asked when he moved.
He responded with ….. “Maybe 6 months ago.”
She looked at him — Like Really? and told him that he was supposed to update his address within 30 days of moving.
He responded with…. “Well can I get my permit?”
She said…. ”No.” and he left.

The only downside was that it cost me $12.00 to park (paid for 2 hours because I didn’t know how long it would take)

Its been over a year and I'm still fighting the dmv to update my address and give me a new license.
Go to the online DMV site and order a "duplicate" DL. You can update your address in the process and get an ID that reflects the change. I think it costs something like $12 for the license.

No matter what county or Sheriff you deal with the people behind the counters (some have been thru a few different sheriffs) do not always reflect the H.A.I.C. … I’ve told one than a couple people dealing with PPP’s or CHP’s being polite and kind to the people behind the counters (especially the ladies) along with “please” and “thank you” goes a long way. Those 2 phrases can open up a world of help especially when the person in front of you has just been an ass.

I will say this about my Wake Co renewal experience. The lady at the counter was fantastic. She was very pleasant and even joked a little. I arrived 20 min before my scheduled time and was leaving before my appt time came up. The part I didn't care for was it took 7 weeks to get my renewal. Now I can understand a new application....but a renewal, c'mon.

The sheriff shouldn't need to know your address and ppp shouldn't exist.
Is that you @Notacop?

I pray Donnie is back in power before I have to deal with the WCSO again.
I’ll bet most of the clerical staff that King Baker has now were there under Sheriff Donnie Harrison … and they are as ready for a change as most people in Wake are. Just hope all those people get out and vote this time to bring Sheriff Harrison back!

As to the 7 weeks … I don’t know what time frames are required for each step but the state‘s part (CHP’s are actually print by the state not by the Sheriff) plus the mailing back and forth between the state and the Sheriff adds at least a week or two to the equation. SC has it right … the state handles the permitting completely thru SLED and local BS is pretty much bypassed.

You hang out on this forum, where people like me post whatever comes to mind, and it takes going into the sheriff's office to discover that maybe there are morons with guns in NC?

Hopefully one day the PPP will be repealed. I doubt the sheriffs would support that though. It's easy money for them.

The sheriffs association supported repealing it when the bill passed through the legislature and was vetoed by Comrade Cooper last session. Of course, they don't actually give a crap about our rights, because they had opposed a repeal every time prior, like when NC still had a RINO governor and Republican supermajority, and their opinion could have actually influenced the outcome. My suspicion is that they only changed their tune because law enforcement began to look like real pieces of crap to the average citizen when we had a summer of uninhibited violent rioting combined with incompetent and/or commie sheriffs making people wait months or years for their "permission" to buy a gun. Who knows, though. Maybe they had somehow just managed not to read the Constitution until 2021.

Direct quote from an Ammoland.com piece written by GRNC (I encourage you to read the whole thing if you're unfamiliar with the history of this issue):

"Republicans passed a purchase permit repeal as part of omnibus pro-gun House Bill 937 in 2013, but it got stripped from the bill when then-Gov. Pat McCrory threatened to veto the entire bill if it contained the permit repeal. So if you want to blame anybody, blame McCrory, not Republicans. (And remember it now that McCrory is seeking the Republican nomination for Sen. Richard Burr’s seat.)"

On a related note, Ted Budd (the other major GOP candidate for that US Senate seat) has great ratings from pro-gun organizations and owns a gun store, so at least we have a good option in the June primary.
