Walmart Checking Receipts: No, Thanks!

Many years ago I worked store security for a major local dept. store. We were hands on back then. We carried cuffs, pepper spray, radios, etc. When we didn't see an actual theft but knew the suspect had taken something, we stopped being covert and followed the openly to be seen. That usually intimidated them to dump the goods. Some of these guys are professionals, as in they come in with shopping list and fill "orders". They would also maintain a tally of the cost of goods so they wouldn't go over misdemeanor if they were caught. I loved going against these pros. They knew the rules, we knew the rules and sometimes it was a real challenge. When ever we caught someone, we we would get their tag # and also go find the car. One time we found a car that the back seat was FULL if stuff from 4 other stores.

thats awesome - wish more stores would do that. i was at home depot last year and a guy just ran right by the cashiers and out the door carrying something in a dewalt box. cashier ringing me up just shook his head and said happens all the time. nothing we can do about it.

I did not read page 2 of this thread so maybe someone already posted this: Go to YouTube and search for Lehto's Law. Steve has a good one on not showing your receipt. If I have something not in a bag, I will show the receipt; if not, then no way.

I figure an ERPO would be in order for someone who put hands on someone OCing. They aren't right in the head.

I’ve bought a 12 pack of voodoo ranger and made the cashier go find me a huge ass bag to bag it up and told them the reason was that I refused to be harassed by the door greeter when I left. I also walk out and say “no thanks” but if I don’t go through self checkout, someone’s finding me a bag to fit the shit I’ve purchased.

They don’t make any attempt to catch actual thieves, so I’ll be damned if I’m letting them treat me like one when I’ve made a legal purchase.

I’ve also noticed that my local store in Zebulon hasn’t had greeters in the last 6 months or so.

Two things I've gleaned from this thread:

1) I'll start tying my plastic Wal-Mart shopping bags shut prior to exiting the store. That way it makes them harder for them to say they're not violating the 4th. And how the hell did we get to this point anyway? Private/Public BS?! I guess I was under the impression that the BOR applied anywhere in America.
2) There's several of you that I'm glad weren't around when the British wanted to start checking permits for firearms back in the day. Y'all have the "if you're not doing anything wrong why do you care attitude". Yeah, screw that.

Are you under the impression that Wal Mart is a part of the Government?

Considering that a shoplifter was just shot and killed in a Chester, SC Walmart, I don't think I'll be shipping there for this issue to even come up.
My father in law keeps telling his wife to stop going to walmart. he doesn't' follow the politics of it, but there's just too much that goes wrong in walmarts.

"Their house, their rules."

Yes...and no.

Yes, it's their "house". Yes, they can make rules about conduct in their "house".

No, you don't have to follow them because their "rules" are not, in fact, codified in an agreement to which people must comply in order to obtain services and products from them.

Which means the best they can do is deny you services as a customer (which may or may not be upheld in court...that would be an interesting case, to be sure) OR they can accuse you of shoplifting, in which case you can wait for the police to show up and show THEM the receipt.

Me? Most of the time I just don't care. Why? Because most of the people on door duty at Walmart are older people, enjoying a job that keeps them busy while providing them some easy pocket money. Walmart hires them when a lot of businesses don't have anything for some of these elderly people. I've no beef with them and most certainly do not wish to treat them with anything except respect.

I'm a little more devious. I've been trying to set them up for years with their restroom signs which say "No merchandise allowed in restrooms" (or whatever the exact verbiage is). I hit the restroom every time I can whenever I'm done at the register.

Once I've paid for it, it's no longer "merchandise". It's "private property". If they don't like that, they can buy my private property back, at no loss to me, and I'll be happy to leave.

Why pay for three extra people at the door (to hassle every customer) when they could pay for one extra person watching the security cameras and actually catch the real shoplifters?
They could hire them as cashiers too. Obviously no bags and self checkout is a problem. Go figure. Be cheap and eliminate the staff and then don’t be surprised when your losses go up in other ways.

Back in the 90s, I worked in a music (record) store. Theft was a really big problem, especially with certain demographics and that crap noise they call music. Similar to as @georgel said above, customer servicing them to death was generally very effective.

My Walmart doesn't check receipts, although there is someone at the door.

If that's changed in the last three months, I wouldn't know because I've quit shopping there. If I could convince my wife to stop shopping there, my feelz would be good.

I personally find it somewhat ironic that I too avoid Walmart like the plague. At the same time I’ve recently been going to the WM market store on Penny Rd in HP. I stopped going to the Food Lion in Jamestown as it’s been going down hill since the ones in the hood closed and the cake topper was when they demanded to scan my DL to buy a bottle of wine. Nope, not happening. I like Publix but it’s more expensive and not real convenient to get to. HT is just ludicrous when it comes to prices and I don’t shop there.

Its really hard to find a good convenient to get to store that’s well stocked, clean, and not overrun with gutter trash customers.

The WM market has their yellow vests, but I won’t use the self checkout and greet them as I pass. Never asked for a receipt.

Agreed.
I've forbid my wife from spending our money at Walmart.

Do you have a Aldi, Lidl or Carlie C’s around ya.

Yeah, there's an Aldis in Asheboro.
We don't shop there to much.

I just finished killing, scalding, plucking, and gutting my Turkey for T Giving. I got this little guy when he was 1 day old and raised him up just for this...

Man, it took forever, but he is now floating in a brine, in the fridge.

Y'all aren't going to believe this, but AFTER cleaning him, it weighs 39.6 pounds.

It's so big that it barely fit into the brine pot, and I'm certain that we don't have a tray big enough to roast him in... He's going to be in the oven forever!

That's a 43 gallon (scalding) tank in the picture...

I only refuse if the person wanting to see my recipe looks to be from a lower class. I refuse to even acknowledge lower classes & I definitely won't have any contact with them. That's just nasty.

That's funny coming from a Wesley Chapel resident ;) I bet those receipt checkers are looking at those overalls you got on and saying 'yep we got one of them Kentuckians here in our upper class Walmart. Better check em good ;)

They'll only stop him if he's wearing a shirt.

I agree. Any tribal ink for a non-Native Indian american, or Japanese Kanji on any not Japanese. should let us know exactly what we are dealing with. Same with feet tattoos on women.
Did you accidentally inject your fingers?
He's lubing the sewing needles with angel dust again

Sshhhhhhhh my houskeeppeers are here & i'm doing a chatterbait video.

I got stopped and asked for my receipt while I was carrying 2 pumpkins (about $6 worth) a few weeks ago. Pumpkins that picked up outside and brought inside to pay for. If I we're going to steal them then wouldn't I just not come inside?

There's at least an Aldi, I've been in there a couple of times, but never bought anything.

Aldi's pretty decent. I don't care for their store brand chips or crackers, but their meat, produce & frozen foods are pretty dang good. We also shop there because they have lots of German goodies that I can't find anywhere else.

Not one of you(unless I missed it) has come up with the obvious thing to say when they ask for your receipt.

"Show me your ID".

I usually just tell 'em nope & keep walking, but if they catch me on a bad day, I'll ask 'em, "You a sworn LEO & have probable cause and/or a warrant?".

Personally, I have no problem showing a receipt if it'll keep prices from going up. Otherwise, eventually the only way to shop will be online. Showing a receipt to someone literally takes a few seconds. I mean that's it. If you don't like it, don't shop there. Those employees at the doors don't make the rules, they are just doing the job they are getting paid to do. Why give them grief? To get home 3 seconds sooner? SMH

OP, I'm sure you're a great guy, I'm not saying you're wrong for feeling like you do about the situation. I feel the same way man. Im saying flip that coin over and look at from a different angle.

You have been randomly chosen for further screening.

I've never been stopped for a receipt check anywhere other than Costco. Every place else I usually head straight out the exit holding the receipt and staring at it like : " What the hell did I just buy that cost so much ?" If anyone ever does say anything I reply : "You too", as I imagine they are wishing me a pleasant afternoon.

I usually just hand them the receipt and keep walking. They can then scan it...and keep it. There's nothing I ever purchase at Walmart that is worth standing in line to return anyway, so why would I need to keep a receipt.
