I just cut up a walnut tree that had been dead a few years. Main bark has long been gone 1/2 into it you got good solid wood. I cut it down as it has been blocking a deer pathway and I just got tired of it. I've cut most of it into about a foot length saved a few longer pieces that looked good. Not sure if any of you like to mess with walnut for blade or gun handles if so give me a holler otherwise it will be smoker wood.
