Washington DC

Someone above mentioned Lyme (or is it Lime...whatever)
If/since you have 8 of you, it might be worth the 10 bucks or whatever a month (and you can cancel anytime) for 'premium' membership - it takes off the initial charge for renting the scooter/moped, which is about a buck or so a ride. If youre doing 4-6 units at a time it would only take a day and the thing is covered.

We did the mopeds in DC back in July and freaking loved it. It was a blast and SO easy to get around if youre ok/good with a 'motorcycle'
If not, go the scooter route and zip from place to place very easily.

I’ll look into these scooter things. Might be worth the cost to not have to put 20 miles of walking in!

I’m not seeing the option to buy an unlimited pass. Do you remember where it is?

Lime Prime. I just checked my app (kept it on my phone because I know I'll be back ha) and it's not an option anymore.
So then I popped onto the website and dont see it mentioned. I also dont see the mopeds listed as their vehicles either. Odd. That was last July and also in November for a ride too.

Sorry brother, I was trying to help
Either way - look into them (or another company like them, I saw more Lime in DC than the others), it's a great way to zip around. Saves time and energy. If it's a hot day in the city then it's the ONLY way ha

Never mind about the Limes. Must be 18.

Bubba...they dont know lol
Hell, one time we were trying to get home from the ballpark (again, check for tickets DAY OF on a site like stubhub for deals) and also trying to de-ass the location (I think I heard that from @Dale Gribble once) because, well I'll come back to that.
Anyway, the moped was close by - only had ONE helmet. Supposed to have two. We just took a pic of one person and moved on. THEY DIDNT KNOW.
Im not saying to screw over a company, Im not for that, but we wanted to get on back and werent going to hoof it another mile to the next moped.

Ok, about getting out of Dodge - the baseball stadium is really nice. And when we were going there we walked through this little area with high end apartments on both sides of you and tons of little shops etc. NICE.
But then when you leave and see the other three sides...well, it doesnt feel as nice. In fact, I was on high(er) alert because of the unsavory folks around.
Yall know my posting history here...but these folks were ghetto A F and I was not feeling great about having my girl there. Knife in hand the entire time we left.
So know that, leave the way you came, dont venture into the unknown of HOOD

I keep seeing people mention knives. What is actually proven/tested to be allowed in DC? As in, you went through security and they were fine with it.

I mentioned the Altoids tin kit. Here is what I carry on ALL vacations to a city. It's got some basic essentials for a day out. Some 'just in case' stuff.
And you'll see the knife.
This picture was taken IN the Holocaust Museum minutes after the tin was opened by security and 'discovered'
Leatherman KB knife. I must admit, this one is the fiance's, i got it for her for Christmas because she had cheap crappy Chinese knives...everyone needs a knife of quality.

I THINK it's 3" blade for the max.
A quick google search pulls up the same

Oh, and let me add - you know why I do the altoids tin? Well, a few reasons.
a - I cant keep a few things in my pocket, all of them 'secure' in one spot, not rattling around etc (there's a 10 or 20 dollar bill, some string in case a lace breaks, sharpie, leatherman multitool, tylenol and toothpicks in the homemade tube thing you see, bandaids. Basic stuff that I have needed while touring a city before.

b - no one checks the altoids tin. They assume it's mints, they just pass it through. She was the first to ever open and, honestly, I think it was because i was stuck at the metal detector for quite a bit because I wasnt thinking about all the metal on my Red Wing boots. Kept setting it off.

Ive been to every place I mentioned above with that kit in various forms, no one ever checks it. Then I can 'unload' all those things at once when I get to a museum or something.

Sometimes I toss a microstream light in there and/or chapstick. It changes with the seasons and plans

Taking the family on a trip next spring, just after the Cherry Blossom Festival. Looking for tips from those who've been there recently. We're staying in Crystal City across the street from the Pentagon and don't plan to venture outside of the limits of the Metro and tourist areas. I know to not wander outside of the tourist zone there.

Anyone have any "don't miss" places to see? Little-known tours or memorials to see? DC has hundreds of things to see/do. we'll have four kids ranging from 11 to 14, so it's got to keep their attention. Already ruled out the Spy Museum as it looks too wordy and "learned." Don't want to be stuck in place for an hour+ with bored kids.

Places on our list so far:
Capitol Tour
Bureau of Printing & Engraving
Air & Space
Udvar-Hazy Air & Space
WWII Monument
Lincoln Memorial
Arlington Natl Cemetery
Natl Zoo
Smithsonian
Vietnam Memorial
Jefferson Memorial
USMC Memorial

Things we're NOT going to do:
Washington Monument: you can look at it from the ground, everywhere...and they don't let you take the stairs anymore
White House tour: politics aside, I'm not dressing up to walk around DC...we'll walk by it to see it and that's it
Spy Museum

Maybe's:
Smithsonian Natural History
National Archives

Don't really need food recommendations as we'll be on a budget. Unless it's someplace that feeds a family of four for $60.
You have a great list, but I'd suggest one or two more. One is the Korean War Memorial (https://www.nps.gov/kowa/index.htm) and the 2d is the American Veterans Disabled for Life memorial which is very near the Capitol (https://www.nps.gov/nama/planyourvisit/american-veterans-disabled-for-life.htm). I worked in DC for most of my 30 year career. If you have any specific questions, please PM me.

Man, this thread just made me buy my own green KBX lol It'll be here by Friday.

But what about a knife in other places like the Capitol? I’d think they would be strict. Probably even make you cut long finger nails!

Not been in the Capitol building in years, cant say. Around the area you arent getting searched or anything.

I'd expect that in almost all federally operated buildings and museums, you'll be checked and probably losing a knife, no matter how small. From the Smithsonian website: "Many items are prohibited at all Smithsonian museums. Do not bring sharp items into the museums such as knives (including pocket or "Swiss Army" style knives), screwdrivers, scissors, etc. Other items not permitted include firearms, pepper spray, and Mace." The full link to the site is here:https://www.si.edu/visit/tips.

After today's SOCTUS ruling, there may not be anything left to do or go see in DC if the libs have their way and burn everything to the ground.
