So bacteria and a virus are way different. Pond water will mainly carry bacteria and other "living" microorganisms. These cannot be vaccinated against. A virus however can be vaccinated against. It's a bit more complicated than that, but this is what it boils down to.
Remember: vaccines are for viruses and antibiotics are for bacteria and protozoa.

On a serious note, I think most people really have the thought that they can just go around looting stuff. Ever attack a well defended position? It ain't easy.

I once lived at a place with a shallow spring and the UV filter was out for a couple of weeks - treated our drinking water with chlorine then used a carbon filter to remove (most) of the chlorine - it was barley noticeable.I'll take chlorine over giardia any day of the week.
My parents had to replace their well pump. Using the well depth, size (diameter) and static water level I was able to compute the amount of water standing in the well and added enough sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione dihydrate to treat it. It too was barely noticeable, but should have disinfected the water.I once lived at a place with a shallow spring and the UV filter was out for a couple of weeks - treated our drinking water with chlorine then used a carbon filter to remove (most) of the chlorine - it was barley noticeable.

At the start of COVID, we bought a 5lb pale of it. Enough to purify a few million gallons of water or some ludicrous amount. Disinfection, plus filtration will likely put you 1,000x better off than the next guy.The product he mentioned is still available. I bought a bag of it (as pool shock) at WalMart this week.
