Back in Jim Bowie's day guns were not very reliable and misfires were common. Once firearms became more dependable, the knife became less important. Today, the only ones that carry a Bowie knife are Sig and Kimber owners. 🙄

The story of the sandbar fight is... the most comical act of violence in american history. Also now I need to figure out how to make a bowie fit onto my mausers bayonet lug

Here you go, they’re quite rare but might be able to make it work.

I'd never heard of that, thanks for the info. I wonder if anyone shouted WorldStar during the fight? lol

My Cold Steel Wild West Bowie was delivered a few minutes ago. It's a big and greasy knife. An old Norinco SKS had less cosmoline than this thing. There was a hang tag in the box that said Cold Steel and no other indication that this was a Cold Steel product. The box and contents reeked of an odor, an almost smokey smell. I didn't try to clean it up but I could see machine or grind marks on the blade and the handles were loose. There's no way that Cold Steel has sunk to this level of workmanship. They must be paying someone to import these things. It will be returned tomorrow.

No pictures, it was too greasy.

Rezin Bowie described the original as nothing more than a big butcher knife. I've lost the picture of one that Jim Bowie presented to a New Orleans actor he admired. It had a 9 1/4" blade. 1 1/2" wide as I recall and is considered the most likely semblance of the sandbar knife that made him famous. No guards or clip point. Looked bout like this:Bowie.jpg After a famous fight in Arkansas congress that left one politician with his arm chopped off and his opponent stabbed in the heart, it became a felony to carry one. This became the case in many southern states as well.

After the disappointment of the Cold Steel Bowie I was still on a hunt for a Bowie. I would like to have had a Randall but it didn't want to pay the price. Besides, I would only use the knife for display or the occasional BBQ event.

I found, what I think, was a good value on a pretty nice knife, $43.29 shipped.

15 inches overall, 10 inch blade, camel bone handle with wood and brass spacers, and a pretty nice leather sheath. The blade is scary sharp.

Bowie2.jpg

The dollar bill is for reference as to the size but mainly to show everyone I still have a dollar.

Bowie1.jpg

The spine of the blade has some fancy marks on it, too.

Bowie3.jpg

Pretty nice and heavy knife overall. No markings as to the country of origin. I'm pretty sure that it wasn't made in the USA for $39.99 + shipping.

If it had a double hilt, I'd own one..........but it don't...so throw it away and git back to finding' one!!!!

I just discovered a Pakistan sticker on the bag the knife was in. Now, does anyone know how to tell the difference in a real Pakistan or a fake Pakistan? :rolleyes:Paki.jpg

Lynn Thompson sold Cold Steel to GSM Outdoors in December 2020.

It's GENERALLY expected in knife circles that the quality will be all downhill henceforward.

I’ve never been a patron of Cold Steel, but I never doubted Lynn’s dedication to his products. He always struck as a true knife nut.

I’m entirely surprised to hear that he sold Cold Steel.

Also worth noting that Cold Steel never actually manufactured anything, as they always sourced their knives. Their line up can hail from Pakistan, Taiwan, USA, South Africa, Seki City, Bangladesh, and so forth.

Since selling the company, GSM has dropped contracts with some of those manufacturers, so some items have disappeared from the catalog.

I was a big fan of their Carbon V products, most of which were made by Western and Camillus (Western may have been Camillus, I'm unsure)

This Pakistan knife is 3 times the quality of the Cold Steel, at 1/3 of the price. I just couldn't believe that Cold Steel would put their name on something like this.

Sad to hear that about Cold Steel. I always respected their products as quality for the price, even if utilitarian. Glad to have the older ones I have in Carbon V. Might start looking for some of the older ones now.
