Weekly snake thread

Once upon a time…. We’d head into the swamp with .22s and a 12ga for closeups... fun times!

Cottonmouths get irritated if you get between them and water, as they are slower on land and mostly water snakes. They move fast and well in water. This is why they'll drop out of trees into boats. They are startled and use to being able to drop straight into the water. But now there is some human randomly there "being attacked", lol.

Same thing when they lay in the sun on up on a bank. If startled, they are going for the water and if you are walking/standing there, they are coming at you or by you to get to the water. They are mellow if if you leave them alone. I think they get a bad rap and have heard many ridiculous attack/stalking stories.
And copperheads are downright docile, mostly.

No one seen snakes this year?

Found this little ring neck snake last week. Quarter for size reference

If all snakes were that size I'd never see any regardless the time of year. What are you doing? On your hands and knees with a magnifying glass?

Thursday I saw what I thought was a "tiny" eastern kingsnake, but compared to yours, it might as well have been an anaconda.

I saw my first snake last sunday morning. Had just woken up, groggily stumbled down the hall to the kitchen and saw

Good morning Kitchen snake.jpg

Round here it ain't officially spring until I've had to chase a black snake around the house at least once.

I sure prefer doing it after I have had a cup of coffee first tho.

I have tin laid out in several places. Also my employer owns a pretty big piece of property on a designated wetland. I have old traffic signs laid around that property as well to attract them.

Me neighbor had to kill a 5' black rat snek last week, on account of it was tryin' to get inside their chicken coop!
Give up a few eggs, or have rats… I believe I’d give up a few eggs on occasion and just relocate the snake down the road a ways.

Oh? That is a thing eh? Kinda like attracting tree frogs with lots of PVC pipe laying around?

Is it for them to hide under, or sun themselves on top? Just lay it flat and leave them as is or add leaf litter or some other preparation to the metal?

Lay them flat, the vegetation under them eventually dies, they’ll get under them on cooler cloudy days for warmth and for shade if the tin is in the shade. The one I pictured above has 3 different kinds of snakes under it. All small like the one pictured with the quarter.

I’ve heard that old corrugated roofing is best, they like being under it where the birds can’t get them I guess. Been planning to put some down in my woods.

Sometimes it amazes me how such simple and obvious things I don't think about. Well, it shouldn't amaze me, but that is beside the point.

Like for instance, old corrugated roofing, which I am always careful about lifting up and trying to move around, never thought about just positioning the stuff somewhere to use as a neat little attractor experiment.

3 diff kinds of snake, that's pretty cool.

Frankly anything I can do to make the outdoors more inviting than the indoors I think should benefit all of us.

I tol' her I would come get it next time, and rehome it at Trouble Ranch!

Was turkey hunting on a buds property last week. Set up in a great spot on a main thoroughfare that gets traffic but is next to a 200y long pond in SE NC. Camoed to the hilt sitting in my blind chair that is 4” off the ground super comfy. Sat there quiet as a church mouse for 30+ minutes. Heard a rustling and spotted luckily just a 3.5’ black snake not a moccasin. He came wi 1’ of me before turning. Went down the hill, didn’t see what he liked so up he came right at me. Had to threaten him with the butt of my shotgun & got him to alter course.

Just glad as hell it wasn’t a moccasin. I got a slight case of the snake whillies and decided to move away from being so low to the ground in that area. Probably cost me a gobbler but I didn’t push my luck.

I’m mostly live and let live type with snakes, and I certainly wouldn’t hurt an eastern king but that’s a couple too many “loves” for a snek.

The only snake I've seen this spring was in the bill of a hawk, and I was too slow to get a picture.

I'm thinking I'll see more now that the cicadas (ie snake food) are coming out.

I saw my first one on April 18 th. I live beside a 100 acre + Corn Field and while walking the Dog I saw what looked like a white root. Curiosity got the best of me so I investigated. It turned out to be a Green Snake but it was twisted so that only it's Belly was visible. It was dead and about half of its body was out of a hole. I tried to pull it out but it was stuck. Not sure if it got stuck trying to get out or if a Shrew got him and drug him down the hole.0418241040.jpg

That one’s looking fir a place to shed

I wish I could find my picture from last year the day I found a shed....in muh bed.

True it was the upstairs bedroom, and I don't sleep in that one, but still, I don't like them getting too comfortable with the idea.

Never did find the snake.......
