    1:15 in the morning.
I just happened to be awake laying on the couch watching old Frankenstein movies.

Then..BAM BAM BAM BAM, someone hammer-knocking the hell out of my door. Now I live out in the country, this stuff just doesn't happen.
My coffee table is inches away from the couch, and I have a magnet on the underside holding an M&P 40. Grab that and go to the door, turn on light, and it's the house-sitter girl that my neighbors have staying while they went to Florida. (I'd met her earlier) She's in pajama's with a blanket over her shoulders.

So I let her in, and she's out of breath and kinda frantic. I'm thinking ok just what the heck happened!? She's absolutely out of breath and can barely string a sentence together. My mind is thinking at minimum one of the dogs got hit, or at the worst someone is trying to get her.
She finally settles down enough to tell me..."I locked myself out of the house." She was letting the dogs out for a pit-stop and locked the door. Of course her phone was in there too.

That's it? o_O Accidentally locked out of the house?
Girl...you just called in a 5 alarm fire for a weeny roast.

I giggled a little bit cause I was relieved that's all it was.
So I grab a thin blade screwdriver and got her back in the house.

But it was a good drill to test myself of how I'd react. I did pretty good in retrospect, but a couple of things I could have been more aware. A blinding-ass flashlight in the off hand might have been a good thing to have, and being more alert to any 'surprises'.

Oh yeah..the next day when she told the homeowner/neighbor what happened, she did say that when I came to the door with a 'shotgun' that kind of startled her.
So there ya go. The M&P 40 is a shotgun. I've had it wrong all these years. :D

    Great story hilariously told!

I like the magnet idea. You stick the slide to it or is a holster stuck with it?

It was not me but my wife. I know she’s is ready if something happens.

I was working third shift. My older son 17 at the time. Came I to the house before curfew, shocking I know. He was so quiet the first dog was still sleeping. The second quietly climbed off her bed and got into a low crawl and started to growl, that woke he up. In the nightstand is a 357 snub. She grabbed that and walked out the bedroom and got to the corner of the L shaped hallway flipped on the light and had the gun pointed down the hallway. My son saw that and dropped fast. Yelling IT’S ME IT’S ME

she asked what he was doing home early and being quiet. He replied. I knew you were not sleeping well so I was just being quiet and trying not to wake you. Good intentions and a great lesson learned. Don’t sneak into my house and mess with mama bear.

My wife freaked out one day when she heard someone in our finished basement where one of my teenage sons lived at the time. She thought he wasn’t home.

He loves to tell his friends that I drew down on him. It’s not entirely true.
I was already at low ready.

It's one of those gun magnets. Gun hangs horizontally by the slide. You have to kind of rock it off the magnet vs. jerking at it, but I've actually practiced that.
This was the first time I've had to grab the M&P. The magnet set-up worked good.

    Dear Penthouse,
...and yeah when she was in my house in her jammies, that's when I realized she's 60 pounds overweight and needs a shave. So as a gentleman I quickly got her back into her own house.
    The end.

My dad had a coworker who shot and killed his teenage son under that exact same scenario. The father went crazy after that, lost his job, and ended up living like a hermit in a shack in the "backwoods" of Pitt County.

Same here, hanging under the end table beside my recliner. I remind my wife occasionally it's there in case she needs it as well.
