I do a bunch of trail running/hiking, typically 20-25 miles every week. 90% of that time alone. Deep in the woods and mountains.

I grew up sleeping in the woods many weekends, just throw down a ground cloth, maybe hang an old shelter 1/2 to keep the dew off.

I’ve camped in an open lean-to in grizzly country. I’ve been stalked by a big cat in Washington state. Narrowly missed an actual real life serial killer.

On the trails here in NC I’ve run into bears, bobcats, junkies, soccer moms and women in comfortable shoes.

Nothing has ever truly scared me in the great outdoors until tonight.

7:20pm, full dark under tree cover but not bad enough to break out the headlamp just yet. I’m 3/4 mile from the truck wrapping up a quick 5 miler after work.

I’m jogging along and BAM! That rock I just about landed on just JUMPED out of the way!

A dang TOAD. A TOAD hopping across the trail made me scream like a little girl and jump into the laurels. I mean, I screamed and nearly wet myself.

The biggest toad I've ever seen was in the NC mountains, bigger than the largest tomato you have ever seen! Took two hands to pick him up. Couldn't believe he didn't roll like a ball when he hopped.

Yup. I bet this thing was 8" diameter.

well, a little-bitty tree frog jumped on my shoulder
and let out his "chirp" right in my ear.
it only took two seconds and i still
am anxious when i hear the "peepers".
