None of my family is really the prayer type, but I would certainly appreciate some positive energy sent my father’s way.

Last Friday he awoke in a lot of pain that turned out to be a perforated ulcer. He had emergency surgery, and the surgeon said that he didn’t think it was going to be cancerous, but unfortunately, the pathology came back today that said it is. He also has pneumonia (god knows how long that’s been going on) All of this is complicated by needing a heart valve and aortic stenosis, leading to figuring out which comes first: cancer or valve. Age, being about to turn 79 isn’t in his favor.

On the plus side he’s starting to recover from the emergency surgery and will hopefully get rid of the NG tube and maybe move on to clear liquids and avoid needing IV nutrition.

His name is Tom and he could use some help.

Thank You.

Prayer for healing and strength.

Thoughts for a quick healing.

We have your Dad, and your family and yourself, in our thoughts and prayers sir.

Prayers and positive vibes sent.

Praying for your Dad and family. I know this kind of thing is hard for everyone. If there is anything I can do to help just let me know.

Wow. That is a lot to take on at the same time. Best wishes for your father as he fights these battles.

And best wishes to you as you help him on his recovery. It’s not easy watching a parent struggle with health.

Long story short, he is doing better now, but it was touch and go for a while. About a week after the surgery, in the regular hospital room, he was filling up with fluid and they decided to put him on s ventilator. They sedated him and he crashed, but was resuscitated and sent to the CICU.

They used diuretics to get the fluid out of him and went from IV sugar water to nutrition to a feeding tube that lasted a couple of days before he pulled it out. Swallow test was good and they unhooked him from all the machines and he is now eating again. However the process destroyed his gall bladder and he has a drain that will stay until he can get it removed.

Unfortunately, the stomach ulcer came back as cancerous and will need to be dealt with, but in order to survive that he needs to get his heart valve replaced (he's got about 35% injection factor they call it). They won't do that unless he has a 2+ year prognosis on the cancer, but nobody has told us the pathology of it (we've asked, multiple times) which is the determining factor.

If the cancer is slow enough, he can get his valve replaced and be strong enough to survive surgery for the cancer, which is basically performing what is called a gastric sleeve where they remove the stomach or most of it.

Currently he's in the regular hospital room and we're looking at having him moved to a rehab facility for a while to get stronger. Of course that comes with a whole host of estate planning issues involving protection from Medicare claw back we need to look at given that he has a long road ahead of him.

Tldr; out of immediate danger, but has a difficult road ahead of him.

Rough set of circumstances to deal with. If this, then that, but then, if so...

All the best for him and the rest of the family, as well.

Prayers for your dad and you
