I see cars pulled off to the side of hwy 1 and other such spots right by rivers/lakes, and I'm presuming those guys are fishing? What are the rules around that exactly? Is any public body of water OK to fish, and you're just risking some sort of parking ticket for stopping there? I see guys fishing in parks too (like Yates Mill, can't imagine there is much there but mid-week there is usually some dude sitting on the walkway dragging a line through the water).

At some point I want to try my hand at fishing, just not really sure where/what so I'm going to start asking dumb fishing questions.

I know your a thrifty guy so just PSA, if your on welfare or food stamps you don't need to buy a fishing license. Good way to save some cash.

Do I have to show an EBT card to the game warden, or is carrying a G2c with 6 rounds of Tula in it basically good enough?

Used to be you didn't need a license to fish with natural bait in your county of residence. This was to allow poorer folk the opportunity to catch fish for the table. They changed it to the EBT/welfare thing several years ago. Can't have regular, working folk catching fish to eat without paying the king's tax....

Rule #1 Don't tell anyone where your honey hole is
Rule #2 Don't tell the truth about where you caught the big one or the bait/lure you caught him on.

Rule #3 add at least 4” and 2lbs to the fish you caughts measurements when telling your friends about it.

Screw that man. If the welfare sucks don’t have to get a license then I’m not getting one either.

What I will say is I will NEVER buy a salt water fishing license. It's one thing to say that MAYBE the SCDNR is doing somwthing to preserve the fish in fresh water but there is nothing they can do about salt water; it's a money grab pure and simple.

from above:
"At some point I want to try my hand at fishing,..."
good for you. please remember it is not called "catching".

Make friends with folks who have ponds/lakes on their property. No license needed. Their rules likely make a lot more sense than those of Fish and Game, DNR, whatever they're called now.

About 5 clicks down through there is an interactive fishing map. Shows you where, but not how. At least it's something.

Every species that swims is different. Decide where you want to fish and for what species then the CFF gurus will surely show you the way.

Fishing to fish or fishing to eat?

Fishing is a lot like selling real estate,, Location, correct bait and then presentation.
The last part of sentence is the hard part.

Rule#4 The only time a fisherman tells the truth is when he calls another fisherman a liar.
