I was planting a tree in the side yard and hit this. Intrigued, I found the edge and started following to see how long it is, I'm about 9' so far and have not found the end.

Background:
-House was built around 1865, We have been here nearly 30 years. This is as far back as we can trace it and we feel like this is fairly accurate.
-We are constantly to this day finding tractor parts, glass, medicine bottles etc washing up every time it rains.

I obviously can't dig this up by hand at this point. Is it worth digging it up? What am I going to do with it once I get it dug up? I am very curious and have a couple theories of what it is. I will talk to the neighbors to see if they remember anything, they have held the surrounding property for generations.

It appears to be about 1/4" plate with those 1" diameter....Stand offs? every square foot. They do not protrude all the way through. They Appear to only be on one side.

What would you do? Any educated guesses?

Images are pretty large so I just linked to them.

It looks like an old boiler plate. If i had to guess, there is a septic or water pipe under it that they did not want to trench into, and the plate is there to protect it.

Don't think so; that's in downtown Charlotte.

I forget how many tons that thing weighs, but it used to spin if you pushed it. Finely balanced like a vault door. The wind would move it too. They had to lock it down because people were getting hurt.
