What Would You Take?

300blk 9in- NO. There is no load in the 300blk world that exceeds a bog stock 7.62x39, and yours is handicapped by a 9in pipe

Curious as to why you feel that a 9” barrel is a handicap for 300BLK. Wasn’t the round designed around that length barrel, with all the gas burned by the time the bullet leaves the barrel?

Anything less than 7.62 on hogs is a non-starter for me.

That said, my choice‘d be easy: my M1-A SOCOM (with 25 rd mags) and my DOMS G-II MOE as backup

(like any M1-A needs any backup on a hog hunt, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!)

I have killed more hogs with the 22wmr than all the other calibers combined. For years on WMA’s in Ga during small game only seasons all we were allowed to use was 22lr. Get close and don’t miss.

The best option would obviously be the Grendel but at 18in and with a can on it, that’s a little long to be using inside a small helo.
I assume the muzzle will always be pointed outside the helo, so why would a longer barrel be a handicap?

That does sound like too much fun!!

Barrel length has a minimal effect on velocity.... to a point. I wouldn't go much shorter than 16in. The powder may all be burned by 9in but the gas expansion is wasted by a 9in barrel. Gas doesn't burn, powder does. Gas expands and drives the bullet down the bore, why shut off the propulsion before it's spent?

7.62x39 10.5- NO. It's a short barrel.

Really, I'd go with 308 at minimum in the 30cal arena. Of your list, the 6.5 is the only one I'd even entertain the thought of taking.
There’s a whole pile of dead pigs out there that must not have got the memo that a 10.5in 7.62x39 was too short to kill them…… this thing is absolutely hammering them.

You need to do a little bit of self educating on that round. It absolutely does well out of a short barrel, and if ammo prices were what the were pre 2020 it’s likely what I would have taken.

No, not always, when we’re riding out to the hunt spot they cruising about 100 knots, so I put my legs and gun inside the cab. The Grendel with a can in it would have been a bit cumbersome in here.

Brother and I are the only ones shooting .30 cal. All other shooters are using 62gr soft point 5.56 or 12ga buckshot. All the guys I asked, said they were dropping just fine with the 5.56 guns

Even more from a 22lr. Does that make it better?

So Derek when are you going and where are you going? Are you there now? Where are the damn pictures!

I went on a hog hunt last year. Brought 7.62x39 and 5.56 16" ARs. I found the 5.56 (soft points) to be far more effective.

All other shooters who were using the rental guns/ammo were shooting Armscor 62gr PSP. They were putting pigs down just fine, even if they had to give them a couple extra rounds. Cost of ammo was also a concern, being that you’re going through so many rounds during a trip 7.62x39 was just a more economical choice. I shot a mix of SP, HP and FMJ, and those pigs didn’t seem to know the difference. Good hits put fairly large pigs down quick.
