I have the opportunity to purchase a
1982 colt DS .38. “Pinto”
Serial number p59xxx.
It’s blued with a nickel cylinder.

I have searched the ole interweb and it wasn’t much help. Some say it never existed, while others say it does.

Any and all help/info would be greatly appreciated… “thank you”

Admins, please move this to the wheel gun area. (Sorry, I thought that’s where I was posting)

The only way to know 100% for sure is to have the gun lettered. If it was a “factory pinto” the value would be higher than a standard blue of course, but this could easily be just a cylinder swap. What’s the asking price and condition? Seems like this gun has appeared before either here or maybe I’ve seen it on another forum. If the price is right, who cares if irs factory or not.

This.

Every factory lettered Pinto I have ever seen in an auction was made in 1982… for the DS, that is in the P59XXX s/n range.

There were only a few hundred factory Pintos made.

I would be wary in the absence of a factory letter; there’s about a 2:1 chance based on the known s/n range that Pinto DSs on the market are clones/fakes.

It’s sort of like buying fine art—does it look “right,” based on the authenticated samples you can see, and is it an amount of money you are fine losing if you buy a factory letter and it isn’t a Pinto?

Have you tried the s/n lookup?

Yes, I ran the serial number and it comes back as a 1982 DS.
