School of the American Rifle gave his opinion and it was pretty surprising, but he's worked on a lot of ARs. I'll post up the video later. My choice was TiN because of slickness, cleanability and color, but I might change going forward.

I picked chrome because I couldnt pick it AND melonite.......

But as nearly all of mine are parkerized outside and chrome lined, and every rifle I've ever been issued had them, parkerizing works.

Yeah-that's something I didn't realize is that milspec even though its phosphate is chrome lined inside the gas key and carrier bore.

I'm going phosphate. He's right, it does soak up oil better. But I think the downside is that it soaks up other things and holds carbon too.

Nitride is my second choice just for how easy it is to clean.

NiB and TiN are snakeoil imho.

Does anyone make a 100% chromed bolt?

chrome but not sure it os like the old school hard chrome really smooth and shiny ones which were easy to clean

Little research I’ve seen says these are Microbest. I have one and really like it. They’ll go one sale for $85 often too.

The first one is old school- no FA notches on it. Nice! (didn't see if KE had FA notches on theirs, but they are Stoner-philes, so probably doesn't either).

I know of some of these "coatings" from motorcycle racing. DLC is the king when it comes to "slick" and hardness. TiN is a ring right below that. The biggest difference is TiN comes with the "bling" of gold in color.

I don't know where this falls when it comes to guns and BCGs, but I assume it's the same. I know this: My TiN coated BCG can almost wipe off the carbon after a day of shooting, whereas others take a lot more cleaning.

SOTAR also thinks turning a Wheeler FAT backwards is a valid way of measuring fastener insertion torque.

Not saying he's always wrong but some of the stuff he says and does is completely nonsensical.

I had an all chrome Air Force BCG many years ago. Sold/traded it at a show.

I'm a Nitride/Melonite fan from research some time back. Best bang for the buck.

I just purchased a Daniel Defense rifle that I have not taken control of yet. They tell me it is chrome lined with heavy phosphate exterior coatings. That confuses me a bit. I have to wait for my new driver’s license to get here in 2 weeks because it expired without me giving it a single thought.

I only mention DD because I have been told that they make a decent piece.

Long story short: back about a hundred years ago when the main danger of commuting to work was wild pterodactyls, chrome was cool and the designers wanted the whole BCG to be chromed. However they and the platers couldnt get the chrome plating process to work right consistently on the exterior of the carrier. So they decided to only chrome the inside and use another coating on the outside.

Years ago, DD used to make a fully chromed milspec bcg with a fully chromed c158 bolt. my guess is they were not easy to produce consistently well which is why they discontinued them. I have one and I think it will survive the nuclear apocalypse.

for everyday use vs cost nitride/melonite is excellent. price aside, DLC is hands down the best.

NiB and TiN are absolutely snake oil.

I voted DLC.

Obviously DLC (I did literally just get my first dlc bcg in the mail yesterday so I may just be trying to justify the extra cost to myself…)

Well, I was waiting for the survey to end before giving away the answers (according to him, anyway).

He likes Chrome-lined best.
He likes TiN least. Oops. But it is easy to clean.

What I learned from the vid is that milspec, which I though of towards the bottom (cleaning issues) is actually good because the important parts are (should be) chrome-lined, that being the inside of the key and bcg bore. My lightweight TiN bolts have given me trouble, so I might get a full size chrome one and be done with it.

sorry...

DLC is designed to be slick as heck. And it’s also a coating specifically designed not to stick to aluminum. We had a lot of issues with stamped parts that were aluminum sticking and galling to the metal details. Even with plenty of oil. We had some DLC coated and we could almost run them dry because of the dlc coatings. So many of the tools we have that are set to run aluminum we have coated now.

I have one bcg that is dlc coated. Wow slick as can be. Take a paper tower and wipe it clean all done.

Hard chrome (matte) bcg: via Mr Guns and Gear (who is in NC according to his business address anyway)

Brownells hard chromed BCG with 9310 MP tested bolt, full auto profile 8620 carrier with or without serrations (for you slick side upper freaks...), and lifetime warranty for $129/ea with code SMSAVE currently here:

I like TiN. I had a S&W AR that the melonite started coming off of before I even got it out of the box.

100% getting this for my 50 shades of FDE .300 build

I like NiB and Nitride for their ease of cleaning while shooting suppressed. I can’t say I’ve had an issue with any coating, but those are my preference. I haven’t tried DLC yet.

Put in the restock email notification. Shouldn’t take too long. A member posted these a while back and I’ve picked up 2 black DLC & 1 FDE. Been happy and trouble free 👍🏻
