School of the American Rifle gave his opinion and it was pretty surprising, but he's worked on a lot of ARs. I'll post up the video later. My choice was TiN because of slickness, cleanability and color, but I might change going forward.
Yeah-that's something I didn't realize is that milspec even though its phosphate is chrome lined inside the gas key and carrier bore.I picked chrome because I could pick it AND melonite.......
But as nearly all of mine are parkerized outside and chrome lined, and every rifle I've ever been issued had them, parkerizing works.
I'm going phosphate. He's right, it does soak up oil better. But I think the downside is that it soaks up other things and holds carbon too.
Nitride is my second choice just for how easy it is to clean.
NiB and TiN are snakeoil imho.
Does anyone make a 100% chromed bolt?
Little research I’ve seen says these are Microbest. I have one and really like it. They’ll go one sale for $85 often too.I'm going phosphate. He's right, it does soak up oil better. But I think the downside is that it soaks up other things and holds carbon too.

I had an all chrome Air Force BCG many years ago. Sold/traded it at a show.I'm going phosphate. He's right, it does soak up oil better. But I think the downside is that it soaks up other things and holds carbon too.

Long story short: back about a hundred years ago when the main danger of commuting to work was wild pterodactyls, chrome was cool and the designers wanted the whole BCG to be chromed. However they and the platers couldnt get the chrome plating process to work right consistently on the exterior of the carrier. So they decided to only chrome the inside and use another coating on the outside.I just purchased a Daniel Defense rifle that I have not taken control of yet. They tell me it is chrome lined with heavy phosphate exterior coatings. That confuses me a bit. I have to wait for my new driver’s license to get here in 2 weeks because it expired without me giving it a single thought.
I only mention DD because I have been told that they make a decent piece.
sorry...Well, I was waiting for the survey to end before giving away the answers (according to him, anyway).
He likes Chrome-lined best.
He likes TiN least. Oops. But it is easy to clean.
What I learned from the vid is that milspec, which I though of towards the bottom (cleaning issues) is actually good because the important parts are (should be) chrome-lined, that being the inside of the key and bcg bore. My lightweight TiN bolts have given me trouble, so I might get a full size chrome one and be done with it.
