High ready? Low ready? Sul? Chin Index? In this episode of Master Class, Ken Hackathorn discusses the benefits, and potential drawbacks, of the various ready positions used by shooters in range, self-defense, and tactical environments. Consider your own strategic needs, and then train aggressively to engrain the good habits that are the most applicable to your situation.

I sent this video to my stepmom today; she's just taken the CCW class and is trying to learn to do things right from the start. She's been a pretty good student, and actually watched this and commented on it.

Some of those new gun owners do want to do the right thing.

I'll also mention that I probably do things 'wrong' here, with more of the gamer mentality than I should. Doing dry practice in the house with a light on my pistol I found I kept dropping to low ready without thinking about why I was doing that. Must be something I've picked up from matches without thinking about the tactical applications or problems.

This is what I learned many years ago from a friend that had to shoot in a 2 way range: If you're standing in a row boat, point the gun up Charlie's Angles style. If you're in a hot air balloon, point the gun down. If you're walking through a sketchy parking garage, keep it in the holster but wrap your hand around the grip. It all depends on the situation at hand. I practice them all and learned how to tap, rack, reload and shoot one handed with either hand.

He didn't mention “high ready”. In close just above your strenum, muzzle down, support hand covering the gun. Offers muzzle control, retention, quick shots, and partial concealment. Allows you to move and turn without sweeping your surroundings

Close. But this allows the support hand to fold right into the grip when presenting to the target.

I've trained in most of those positions. As mentioned each has it's place. My default position is low ready. I was taught the 5-part draw and this is one of the positions in the transition. So, it's part of the continuum. I've use the temple index in some situations, but didn't realize it was recognized as a ready position. Isn't there a position that's being caught, where the person basically does "punch out" from centered high chest index, like from a "prayer"? I never liked that.

Yes he does! Never met an easier person to talk to. A great man.
He came here and spent 3 days at B&M HQ and we had a ball for the entire time he was here. There were only 4 of us that got him here and we had his company the entire three days while he bunked at Mike's.

The stories were as good as the instruction. His early days at API later Gunsite with Cooper and Chuck Taylor. He is the last remaining. He and I are the same age. We also share the same feelings about women.

When at the NRA Convention in Charlotte he sneaked up behind me and lifted me off the floor with a big laugh and his first question....You Still Married?????

How long ago has that been? I can only imagine how much a hoot it was being able to hang out with him for a few days. I met him at shot show 2017. I recognized him in passing and right there he stopped and gave me his time, which was well over an hour.
