I'm itching to buy a Zastava AK. Just can't decide what I want. I need help deciding. Choices are M70, M77, and M90. My goal is something fun to shoot and possibly take up rotation as home defense gun. Also a hedge against future foreign gun bans. Here's what my comparison is looking like:

M70 pros:
- I have mags
- Shorter package
M70 cons:
- Concerned about the availability of 7.62x39 in the future
- Not as unique as the others

M77 pros:
- They look sweet
- Unique cool factor
- .308 is popular and will always be available
M77 cons:
- Oddball magazine
- .308 expensive

M90 pros:
- Ammo availability.
- Cool factor
M90 cons:
- Heavy for a 5.56 rifle?
- Less common and non-standard mags that I don't have.
- 7.62x39 > 5.56

Thoughts?

While my first reaction was, "All of them", for your intended use, fun/home defense. I think the M90 easily wins out.

Consider this variant.
7.62 so mags not an issue.
Interesting variant so possibly “rare” in event of a ban
Rail and m-lok slots good for lights for home defense

M70 with wood furniture.

Don't worry at all about x39 ammo availability. A ton of countries, including ours, make it. It will continue to be available and affordable here for plenty of time. Hell, Chinese x39 has been banned outright for 30 years and can still be found all over the place.

Now if Zastava came out with something in 5.45, that would be a valid concern...

Love my m90. The weight isn't a issue it's a pro. It's like shooting a laser. Zero recoil. Mags are the only problem. But I bought 20 over the last two years so I'm not worried anymore on that subject.

But I also own the other two as well. 5.56 is easier to play with every day and put a can on for different loads

M70 or m90, and here’s why

The m70 is a classic and are hard to beat. It’s just a good classic ak

The m90, it’s a piston driven 556c yeah it’s a little heave but 556 is lighter than x39. Also 556ak’s are gaining in popularity and mags are a lot easier to find now and are not that much more then regular ak mags

I have an M70 NPAP, only issue ever was the trigger and hammer pins were too short so they got replaced, and the OEM paper clip retainer for said pins was also replaced with a plate.

You can't do much better than an NPAP, and more accurate than you'd expect.

Circled are the first shots I took with the rifle the other day -- 100 yds, irons sights, resting the forend on a block of wood, tulammo (the other holes are from zeroing a scope later). I didn't even have to adjust the irons.

I shot this with a primary arms 1-6 a little later. It was hard to hold steady, I definitely could do better.

I'm very pleased with this rifle. Thanks to all who gave advice!
