I can still remember the first time I heard it, he was a guest on the John boy and Billy show and there was about ten seconds of silence after the song, I thought they had miss timed a commercial or something, but then johnboy just said "wow".

I’ve spent a lot of time on the rivers of NC and VA. The song certainly makes sense.
