I sure didn’t, until it was too late… but still hoping those who know can shed some light on it.

Didn’t realize Remington made two different receiver styles and two differ bolts styles. I found out the hard way when I ordered a new long action receiver for a precision 300wm barrel and bolt I had to go on a Bell and Carlson stock. Received the receiver and the bolt would not go into the receiver. Looks like the bolt does not have the cutout in the lug that matches the receiver on cute right side. Is this an old or new style? What’s the correct term to use when ordering another receiver or would I be better off getting a new bolt?

Not sure I’m tracking. Can you post pictures?

I think that sounds like an old style bolt. I recall that Remington added the slot in the mid-to-late 70’s as a measure to prevent bolt binding

(going off memory on this)
I think this may be the case. So I will need to figure out what’s cheaper …. A new bolt or a sourcing an old receiver.

Ok.. I am terrible at close up pics and I know there is some work to be done on the bolt.. first things first.. here is a pic of the brand new receiver end. Toward the middle of the pic on the right, you can see the protrusion into the bolt area. On the bolt pic, you can see there is no notching in the lugs that will it allow the bolt to slide along the “rail”. It’s a positive stop / no go for sure.

There should be a notch cut going through one of the lugs on the bolt. See below. All of my 700s are older and have the rail in the receiver and notch cut through the bolt lug. I wonder if the bolt you have is for one of their magnum actions?EDAA83F5-8346-4257-ACFC-4438500643BD.png

It may be easier to find a bolt body. Pacific Tool and gauge has them, but they are hit or miss to deal with. Unfortunately you have to get someone to either weld or solder a bolt handle on ( and time it correctly)

After a little reading. It seems that prior 1970 700s did not have the bolt bind rail so the bolts didn’t have the raceway cut into the lug. So the receiver is correct, now you either need to cut raceway in the lug or purchase another bolt body. Even if you get another bolt body with the raceway, the bolt lugs still needs hand fitting.

Thanks for the prior reply and the info above, super helpful. Back to the drawing board. Will need to make some decisions , as I feel this set up has great potential and I want to make sure I get this right with the understand I may need to empty the penny jar to do so.

Yeah sometimes is good to slow down on a project and do more research instead of making hasty decisions. Otherwise you’ll be going back to the penny jar A LOT!!! Don’t ask me how I know 😕

Thanks for the info and suggestion. I took a look at their website. They seem to have nice products.. this may be an option for parts and then have a pro LGS fit and finish as Average Joe suggested.

Great memory! As confirmed by another member’s research you were on it. Thank you!
