I found a Pelican Sentinel 120XR that is perfect for an upcoming trip. But everywhere I look online, it’s out of stock.
Are there any secret online sites that sell kayaks??

1) It's off season for them.

2) LOTS of people my area (Eastern NC) took up kayaking during their COVID time at home. Maybe it's the same everywhere?

Here's a tip. If there's a kayak touring company anywhere near you see if they're selling last season's kayaks. You can save a ton of money for a nicer boat that you would otherwise buy.

One of my boys was after one last summer.

He finally found a blow up kayak on Craigslist and bought it.

Not sure how far you is from me but I have an ascend fs12t you can borrow for your trip if you don't locate what you are after. I see some good deals on Craigslist fairly often too.

Because we’re heading up Shit’s Creek and some of us want to paddle a kayak instead of a boat?

Add to all of the above. Supply chain issues getting parts and raw materials to build them. Several brands canceled 2020 production in early summer. It took me 3 months and 2-3 different orders to finally get a kayak for my wife. Feel Free just stopped producing their 2020 line in June or so and shifted to 2021 but with limited production. Jackson just stopped producing boats completely over the summer IIRC. Demand skyrocketed at the same time supply disappeared.

I've been wanting a Solo Skiff for a long time. Finally got the funds for it and none to be found. Talked to the head honcho and he said exactly what @chiefjason said.

Since we've pretty much answered why kayaks are in short supply, answer me this.

Why have bacon bits been in short supply at my local Publix for the last 3 months?

.

Demand is high. Supply is low.
Also...2021 will have a plastic shortage.
Right now it’s at the manufacturer level with resins going up in price and low in stock. The same folks who are saying this are the same ones who predicted paper shortages causing the previous shortages in paper products (and the great toilet paper event of 2020).

these are interesting times we’re in!

Talked to the young lady that runs the boat shop at Outdoor Supply in Hickory. She said they are getting boats in stock again. Over the summer any boat they had in the shop was spoken for. They don't deal in cheap boats. But the boats they carry are priced pretty well. Cash might get you a little better. Might be worth a call.

Guy on Rte 1 just south of Vass has a bunch of used ones for sale on the side of the road. Not sure of the prices though but he’s got quite a few.

There was a kayaking outfit in Swansboro, NC that had some killer deals on gently used fishing and normal kayaks from their rental fleet last year. Most of it was posted through facebook. It might have been either Pogies or Barrier Island Kayaks.

is this the answer to the bacon bits question?

Son in law works for Dick’s. Canoes and kayaks sales soared last Spring during covid stay at home mandate. No place for recreation inside so everyone hit lakes, parks, and trails. Only the cheaper units are getting back at stores.

Circling back (thanks Psaki), I put a deposit down on a Crescent Crew kayak through River Rooster out near Oakboro. Should deliver March sometime.

Also saw some for sale at Sam's the other day.

I'm somewhat amused by how pickup trucks are not overly useful for carrying large items.

Well they keep making trucks with shorter and shorter beds. I can't see but I imagine his truck has a 66 inch bed since that's the most common length, and plenty of trucks have been made even shorter. Trying to find a long bed truck is like getting blood from a turnip.

I think those hitch extension things are genius.

Got one for our kayaks:

I can make peace with Chinese junk in my garage, but I'd have second thoughts about relying on it while attached to my truck. Might be buying someone a new grill and/or windshield.

You'll still need to secure your load. I find it a good product for what it needs to do (like to keep the kayaks from flapping in the wind).

Everything has its limits.

Here's one made in Thomasville NC at merely 4 times the price.
