put your bead down. spray the entire bead with the foaming glass cleaner. spray your finger with the foaming glass cleaner. use your freshly sprayed finger to dress it. the glass cleaner will prevent the caulk from sticking to your finger or the areas beside the bead where you don't want it.

To apply caulk well:

Steady hand, correct angle, consistent squeeze, and don't make a large bead in the process.

I will second the tape mask (I prefer blue painters tape.)

Personally, I recommend to get the tape close together, keep a wet rag with you to wipe your finger off, and I've found that often folks are using too much caulk at once, so going a wee bit lighter can help with some.

Remember: if you only get enough caulk in the crack to just fill it then you can always comeback and place another bead.

I hate tape masking except where absolutely necessary. I never use it as a routine.

Often times one wastes more time masking than they would by just learning how to do things the right way in the first place.

A lesson learned from Dad, after he watched me spend a lot of time masking around windows I was in the process of painting the trim around.
