Other than putting a big ol smile on this kid's face...what did I get?

I was at a swap meet hosted by our local range yesterday and traded an old scope for this little .300BLK Handi Rifle. It just appealed to me. Looked like a fun little gun the strap to a backpack, let the young 'uns play with, etc.

What do I need to know about these things? This one is branded H&R and has an AAC roll, mark as well. It's wearing a Burris FastFire now as well.

If I’m not mistaken that little gun had a fairly short run from AAC and I think will go to almost “cult classic”. It ain’t gonna win a beauty contest but a 5 lbish 30” overall length package that sends out subsonic or supersonic rounds out with no problems is nice ... but more impressive is mount a can (since the barrel is already threaded) and optic and you are still like you’re still likely under 7 lbs and 38”. Nice pick up!

With that smile you won the day.
Congrats!

I'm deciding now if I need to order a 51t mount for my AAC 762-SD or a threaded end cap for my form 1 9mm can.

I have the same gun, love it suppressed.

Youth stock does present challenges with an optic, if you mount it at a reasonable height the hammer hits it, if you mount it high cheek weld is no bueno.

I put a Burris FastFire RMR on it that I think will be just about perfect. A scope would kinda defeat the light and handy concept.

Will the FF see over the can?

One thing to watch for. I’ve probably fired 5 boxes of S&B through mine and the primers get pushed back on every round. Not enough to cause any problems. I only mention it because the stuff is cheap. Don’t have this problem with Hornady.

Mine has a 51T mount. I had a Vortex 3x prism Spitfire on it for a while but moved it. Not sure what I want on it now. It is awesome suppressed with subs, quiet like a bolt gun but silly small. Don't have to cycle anything so you can load it down with light pistol bullets subsonic instead of 200+ grain ones and your boy can shoot it with no recoil at all to speak of. Not that the heavy subs recoil either.

Enjoy!

Palmetto projectiles has cast coated 203 grain bullets that are inexpensive.

You might also want to look for one in 357mag and put it in the youth stock. Would enable him to shoot 38special and you save a few bucks. Would need to thread it.

I reload 300BLK already, so Ammo cost
isn't terrible.

But, at ~$250 a copy, it wouldn't want bad idea.

So, other than Ammo cost, what's the benefit of .357 over 300BLK in this application?

A quick peek at the numbers would say that 300BLK supers average around 1400ft/lbs muzzle energy while .357 are ~1200ft/lbs

Recoil, I suspect, would be harsher with .357.

Straight wall case is Uber easy to load.
No shoulder/headspace to fool with.
No need to lube brass.

158gr 357 mag @ 2000fps is a beast that recoils like a puppy. (Lil gun or h110 powder does it)

38spl costs about the same as 9mm to load, so you will practice more for less.
38spl suppresses REALLY well.

I guess the bottom line for me is this was an impulse acquisition that will be a fun option for my boys.

I don't see it getting shot more than a handful of times per year, making ammo choice a non issue. I already reload 300BLK subs for my AR/SBR and can gear up for supers as needed.

If it gets hunted with, it would be my youngest boy. He's 8 now so it'll be a few years. And even then, I'd be happy restricting him to 50yd shots with 300 supers and a red dot.

So, why invest another ~$300 in duplicating what I already have?

357 Maximum.... You can shoot 38s 357 mag and 357 Max. Good luck finding one for $300 though. I got one because I wanted it and after the fact realized how much it could be used for and how good it would be to teach my kids to shoot with.

Honestly, I think you'll have fun with the rifle and if you're already loading 300 you won't notice loading a few more.

Tim, I am not completely certain but I think AAC has ended the run of these little Handis and I don’t think H&R are offering a .300BO barrel or threaded even. I really think you have a possible cult following carbine like say the Marlin Camp carbine ... man I wish I had bought one of those in .45acp ... that likely won’t drop in value or possibly even gain a little as long as it is cared for.

Any of the pistol caliber H&Rs fall into that category.

This dude is having way too much fun with this little rifle:

For hunting I would select the 300blk over the 357mag, more versatile, and over the 357max, cheaper.

For suppressed target shooting I would select 38spl, cheaper, faster to load, and quieter.

Since you bought the 300blk and you already load for it, I wouldn’t be in a hurry to spend $300+ and then threading cost on another in 357mag.

That said, they are all getting harder to find so if you get the opportunity you’ll want to think about it for a minute. FWIW, I’m thinking of selling all of mine and going to contenders, at least as a long term plan.

Do it. I have one of these rifles suppressed and nail guns are louder.

should I put the Form 1 9mm can on it with a direct thread mount, or the pig of a .30 cal can? AAC-762SD

If you plan to shoot supersonic suppressed go with the 30 cal. If you only plan to shoot subsonic the 9 can will work just as well.

Agreed.

So, here's a question.

My Form 1 "9mm" can is almost 100% Titanium.
Ti VSR for baffles
Ti spacers
Ti 1.5" tube
Ti end cap/direct thread
Only steel in the build is a Valve Spring in the blast chamber.

It's the SDTA "Solvent Trap" set up.

The aperture on the business end is .426". Way over bore for a 9mm.

What makes this not suitable for supersonic? I know that most factory built 9mm cans say they're good for subs only on 300BLK....but, why?

AT 50 yards hit them with subs. On youth hunting day this is what my 13 yo daughter was set up with. I had her in a stand where all the shots were under 50 yards. FWIW, my AR is accurate with subs out to 200 yards with Hornady ELD-X. I just need to get a powder that runs it more consistent. And no I wouldn't hunt with it that far, but hitting steel is SOOOO much fun with it.

Those handi rifles are very accurate and stupid quite. Perfect for a kid or a small woods rifle. I like mine in the winter because the short stock compensates for a thick coat.

Usually choice of materials and design. Ever seen the cutaway pic of the Saker and Specwar? A lot different than the baffles in an Octane.

There are cans out there (like the Omega 9K and 45K) that are rated for subs and supers.

Yours may work just fine being all Ti.

you're not helping, lol! Doc's a good place? Haven't heard of them.
Doc’s is a dangerous place ... they have good stuff besides the latest trend stuff. Their prices are not cheap but they are not Hyatt’s outrageous ... fair price and cash sometimes will talk. My wife forbid me from going after I bought home a P7 on my last trip.
