Why is a "clean out" in the tree area?

There are several of these clean out caps around where trees were before we cut down 15 of them. Too many in a small area.
Nothing but dirt under them when I took a look inside.
They are not a sewer drain clean out access.

Are they open on the bottom? If someone was medicating trees they could fill that up and let it drain into the ground. Or a hidden squirreled away capsule?

No termite traps.
Tree feed sounds most likely.
The trees were far too sense in the small area.
I'll take the ones out where we took the trees down.
