New Sig wood grips for my P229 Classic - looks great. Do I need to be concerned about IWB carry in a kydex holster - ie. wear on the wood finish and checkering?

Depends... does normal wear bother you?

I say carry with the grips that shoot the best for you and don't worry about it.

Personally, I think on an EDC gun, wear should be expected. The gun is going to get rubbed on things, pick up oil, dirt, sweat. The grips on all of my IWB guns have a few dings and scratches.

As @BigWaylon had to remind me they’re tools. Use them accordingly.

I wouldn’t worry about wear on an edc.

Nice guess, but nope. Been carrying since I moved to NC, so about 10 years. First time with wood grips. Usually had Hogue wraparounds, but noticed they collect moisture under the grips themselves. So, I’ve been carrying a while. Just looking for advice.

I wouldn’t worry an awful lot about it. If it’s going to get carried and going to get used, it’s going to get wear...whether it’s a firearm, knife, flashlight, etc.

As long as you can make it do what you want it to do when you need it to, you’re good.

Other than discoloration from oils/moisture and wear from banging around.... is there any risk to carrying with wood? I've got a pistol that looks awesome with wood grips but haven't invested in them yet because I do occasionally use it and was worried that wood would suddenly fatigue and crack and fall off or something dramatic.

I believe all production wood grips are stabilized and shouldn't be significantly affected by temperature or moisture swings. Yes they will take some bumps and bruises, but they will match the overall wear that accumulates on the rest of a carry gun. Carry it and love the character that builds over the years.

It depends on the nature of your sweat. I carried a Don Williams alloy BHP almost daily for a year+. My sweat took the finish off a pair of Madagascar Ebony grips made by Craig Spegel. The finish on the left grip panel was compromised. It was dulled and disscolored. The grips themselves were fine. There was a ding here or there but overall had held up well except for the finish. I sent the back to Mr Spegel with a $10 bill IIRC and he refinished them back to original condition! After that I moved them to another gun and slapped some micarta on that gun.

I prefer wood grips, and yes... they take wear, and sweat can affect them.... but as has been stated, honest wear is character.

On the other hand, the first set of grips I ever wore out were factory rubber grips on a Delta Elite. Inboard panel wore almost smooth in a large area, and the actual medallion on that grip corroded very badly.... actually lost the enamel finish.

And thats just the GRIPS.

Look at it like this. If you suddenly found yourself in a shootout and you seek cover and someone else chooses the same cover and suddenly produces a firearm without a mark on it are you gonna be watching the ones sending lead your way more or the guy with the pristine EDC firearm?

I carried j-frames with wood grips for years; no sign of fatigue or cracking. Rock on with those grips, they look nice !

Personally, I carry Glocks/plastic strikers for this reason. They are ugly tools that work that you don't have to worry about. My nice guns get treated slightly better.

Wood grips go in a box. Replaced with G10 or something more stable and durable than wood. Would only use wood on a safe queen, and I don't own any of those. Never bought a gun based on looks. If I win the lottery, there may be a few safe queen revolvers with wood grips. Just my opinion.

Let's be realistic here - I was concerned about sweat impacting the grips. Evidently this is a non-issue so I'm no longer concerned. I do appreciate all the USEFULL input.

If you want to preserve the cool looking wood grips maybe you can grab some VZ’s that look similar but can handle the conditions better.

VZ grips have a couple patterns that seem "wood like" I actually use one of the 320 pattern on my 329pd in the "black cherry"(cant remember the color name), and the grips look great, the rest of the finish is certainly showing use though!

Ordered a set of Hogue aluminum black grips for EDC. Wood grips go in the P229 accessories box.

Ive always wondered how the aluminum grips would wear in, I bet it will be a good fit your application!

How easily you're swayed away by some 80s iron.

That is one of my shameless lottery guns.
When I hit the MegaMillions I am going to buy them all. Every single one.

Then change out all the grips to platinum infused giraffe horn with diamond inlaid scorpions. And I am gonna stick them in mink-lined elephant testicle holsters, trimmed with gen-u-ine gold ostrich hair.

For carry I never think about looks, nor wear, only form/function
if wood suits your form/function need buy an extra pair for pictures🙂

No rabbit fur cozie to set it on in the safe? Well, I guess we can't all dream big.

And to be on topic, see how pedestrian it looks with the plastic? Wood would classy it right up.

When the next AWB comes down and we're all stuck at 10 rounds again, an 8 round carry gun will seem like a reasonable idea. Then I'll be able to flex on @NKD and not be giving up so much usable capacity.

You already flex on me with my pathetic Glock 42.
