I know it’s a sin to wish y’all a happy Yom Kippur but I’m gonna do it anyway.
Yeah, why not,
Yom Tov my friends of The Tribe
Belated, but hope it was an easy fast...
I ate like a pig... I had lamb instead of pork though...
I did my first fast at 5 years old. I wanted to be like the big kids.
Not eating wasn't so bad. It was not drinking water for 24 hours that really kills you!
So a little family history
My mother's father was Jewish, when he turned 18 he married a woman who was not and that did not go over well with his family. He fell on hard times, joined the Marines, and then WWII broke out and he saw action in the Pacific theater. Once he got out he became a life insurance salesman and did very well at that, made a lot of money and lived a very full life.
I would spend many summers with him, he was possibly one of the biggest influences on my life. But even though he had been "disowned" he would still practice a lot of the traditions and I got to be around for a few, but not as many as I would like. I have found memories of sitting on the floor of his WV cabin listening to him read stories from various books he had around. The man never owned a tv, he said it was just a waste of time. I always find that part of my family's ancestry very interesting and wish I knew more about it, but the opportunity have never arose. If I can find a picture of him later today I'll try to post it up.
I like yams and kippers. Also henweighs.
Any idea where his cabin was in WV? Some beautiful places in those mountains.
If memory servers me correct between droop and hillsboro
Man that is some beautiful country right there. If you take 219 north I lived about an hour, hour and a half or so from snow shoe ski resort. Of course if the road was straight it would have only taken 45 minutes.
Very easy fast. Back was hurting from standing. Happy and healthy year to all.
Two good friends, one Greek and Jewish, I got invited to all the special days. Learned a lot.
BP, I am 65 and still learning every day. Unbelievable the customs/laws of the Orthodox Jews and I am far from Orthodox.
Good for you to take the time to learn. Helps understand the word or maybe just a very small part of it.
What’s a henweigh?
I couldn’t just leave you hangin like that.
Thanks Pard, we'll just leave em wondering.
Beat me to it.
You are cruel. I like it.
And just for the record the answer has changed a lot since I was a kid.
All of us got to eat good food too, just hit 60 in July.
AHHHHHhhhhhhhh to be 60 again...…………………………..the trouble I could get in...…………...
My mother side is Jewish my dads side is catholic. Nothing better then being a kid and having all of the holidays.
Now I got a hankering for some matzah balls!
Shouldn’t be difficult to find around Jamestown.
If I want em I will have to make em myself
Funny story @Jeppo, about 15 years ago I was looking for some matzah. Couldn’t find it at HT or food lion (must be anti semites). Knew of a place on high point road called Jerusalem market. Walked in and ask the guy behind the counter if they had any matzah. It was then that I looked at the guy and noticed he did not look Jewish and this must be the Palestinian side of Jerusalem. He gave me an unfriendly answer of no and I slowly backed my way out of the market.
My wife was in the car and almost pissed her pants laughing at me when I told her what happened. I haven’t been back. I don’t like camel nuts
I love good kippers. About two pounds.
@Amps 13, yeah, I know the place. Pretty amazing falafel sammich but crazy high prices.
Now, I have a story for you. When I was a tiny tyke, my grandma would make matzo ball soup. I always enjoyed when the balls were big and heavy. I’d sit on the phone book at the table and compliment her on how wonderfully heavy hers were. Later, somebody told me that matzo balls are judged on their lightness and “floatability”. In other words, telling her I loved how heavy they were was a terrible insult. Much later, it became a family joke.
Lol, don’t care for my balls to be heavy either!
We did the same thing but caught it faster than you. Never asked for anything just quietly left.
I like sardines but I can't eat those little herrings.
