You might be old-school if....

When I went to Coast Guard boot camp, we shot real Beretta M9s for score, and I earned the sharpshooter ribbon/ insignia on my first try.

A couple years ago, my nephew decided to follow in my footsteps and joined the USCG. I flew to NJ to watch him graduate from basic. They didn't do live fire anymore. They "qualified" with fake plastic pistols that shot a red dot laser at a tv screen. That made me sad... Kids these days don't even get to smell gun powder at basic training...

It really didn't matter for him though. After basic, he got to go home for one week before reporting to A- School. The dumb bastard decided not to show up. After being awol for a week, he called the base and said, "My car wouldn't start. Can I just come in for the next school rotation next month?" They said, "No, don't bother, you're done. " I still don't know if he got an honorable, dishonorable, or other. I haven't talked to him since then and I honestly wouldn't believe whatever he told me.

Oh yeah, and he knocked his girlfriend up while he was on leave. Now he has two kids, no job, and they live with his dad (my brother).

I was in from 2006-2010 active duty. In Africa my M16A2E3 upper was from '93 and the lower was from '84. In Kuwait my M9 was an 80's model, can't remember exactly what year and my M16 was old too. We Seabees aren't exactly on the forefront of high-end tech lol. We had flak's from Vietnam for a while, we wore type 2 woodland camo until the very last minute it was unauthorized. Type 3 desert camo, no chocolate chips. We had to "aquire" a lot of stuff on deployment to do our jobs because of shitty budgets.

I had M16A1s & steel pots in Basic & was the squad leader of a Vietnam era gun track with a Korea era mortar tube & a WW2 era .50 cal. And TA-312 field phones & AN/PRC-77 radio. Ruined a great noob prank when we switched to SINCGARS..

Those old flak jackets, ugh, those things stunk, locked in the sweat and grime. And if you got one too big they really chaffed.

My uncle retired from the Navy, EOCS, all of it in the SeaBees.

Worked a lot with EO's I worked a lot of equipment myself when we couldn't get and Alfa Dawgs to help us. When we got rid of the Nam flak's we got newer type 2 camo flak's with upgraded kevlar lining and slots for SAPI plates, still front vertical closing, we didn't get the good flak's until our 2008 desert deployment. With all 4 SAPI plates it must have weighed 45-50lbs not including ammo and all the other gear, 3L Camelback, etc.
