Yep. Same with the "safe drivers rewards" before the automakers were doing it, where you plugged a reader into your OBDII port to provide those same metrics/data to be used against you. And you can bet they'd deny a claim if the data showed you speeding, etc. at the time of impact.
 
Do all manufacturers send this data? I know you can get a GEICO app that will record speed and sudden stops if you want to be in the “safe driver” program or whatever it is. Had no idea my Tacoma might be sending data to my insurance company? Can’t read the article posted, not paying for it.

Because insurance companies are willing to pay for it because it's worth big bucks to them and there are no laws against it yet.

So it is general data, not tied to the owner of the vehicle? I feel that would be illegal.

Is it 'connected' in any way/shape/form - ie auto start or any of that junk?
If so, it is probably tattling on you too..

My Taco is a 2013 and has no telemetric anything so I'm safe..

If it's tied to a VIN, that's all that's needed.

I see. Found an article without a paywall. I requested all my data from LexisNexis. If my insurance company can use my driving data to raise my rates, I’m going to see if I can use it to lower them.

From what I've been told, by people who used the "good driver" OBD reporting dongle - being categorized as a 'good driver' was almost impossible.
I mean why would they wanna lower the rate you pay??
One or two "hard" accelerations, say to pass or make an exit ramp, would immediately disqualify you..
One quick braking incident, because some moron pulled out in front of you, would cause the same DQ..
Their parameters were just insanely narrow = no real benefit to the customer but hey, the insurance co. gets more data to screw with us!

Should be interesting to see what LN has on ya but I wouldn't expect any miracles on the redux insurance rate thing.

Yeah I’m not expecting much. Been thinking of changing companies anyway (if I can get lower rates). 21 years of driving with no accidents or claims, should be lower than the BS I’m paying now.
 
My parents have that tattle tale BS in their vehicle. The passenger can't even talk on the phone without it giving a negative hit to the driver(vehicle). My work truck (KW) has a camera and schit connected to the vehicle. Records speed, braking, acceleration among other things. Even tells you to reduce speed if it thinks you are speeding or following to close. It is very annoying and hardly ever accurate
 
Kia, Mitsubishi Honda, Acura, Ford, GM, Subaru, Hyundai all do this (report to an agency/data seller). It's my understanding that the Germans don't. I see no evidence that Toyota/Lexus or Mazda is selling people out either.

I’ll find out within the next 2 weeks what this database has on me (and my Toyota). I hope you’re right and they don’t participate.

I also requested data from Lexisnexus just out of curiosity. I'm aware they have a lot on everyone not counting the vehicle data.

Just because they don't participate, doesn't mean they don't collect the data.
And of course once the data is collected, it can't be uncollected.

Of course but if it isn’t being used (currently) from Toyota vehicles, it’s better than it being used.
 
And it begins. Remember you consented when you bought the car with all the Tattle-Tale electronics and then hooked your phone too it also for extra data. Better sell that fancy newfangle car and go old.

The data is owned by a 3rd party company that the automakers deal with to complie the data. A states supreme court recently sided with the auto manufacturers. They own the data and do with what they please, selling it to insurance companies honestly should be the least of your worries.

Remember cash for clunkers. (Another nail in the coffin for older Non OBD cars.)

my car is not telling on me. I drive old crap that is paid for and has no fancy stuff. some times it is good to be broke.
 
The onstar receiver in my truck was gone on day one when i owned it.
Do you know where I can find mine? It's a 2015 Silvarado.

Several days after I bought it from @Burt Gummer he got a call from OnStar that all four tyres were flat... they were being replaced!

They don't collect it to not use it...
It is being used for something and sooner or later will get sold because data has value..
And we have little to no way to know what it is being used for or when it gets sold or to whom it is sold to.

It means they can and they will.
There is zero consequence to them if they collect that data anyways.
That data has value and companies like $$ above all else.

It is like all the subscribers to Ashley Madison that were 'shocked and appalled' they didn't have privacy..

Eh. I think there are more smart people that don’t work for these companies than do. There will (hopefully) always be a way to disable the transmission. I doubt it would be easy or maintain any warranty. But I don’t doubt that it is possible.

I buy older used vehicles, too. I have hope that by the time these vehicles fall in the age range that I would buy them, their hardware and software will be out date and no longer supported and won't communicate worth squat.
 
The “safe driver” programs seem like one of the biggest idiot traps out there right now. Sadly, they’re not only hurting themselves but with enough people opting in, the rest of us will, by default, be classified as riskier.

When I buy a newer vehicle, I’ll 100% be looking into stopping this transmission crap. There are plenty of tuners and programmers out there that let you change everything from when your mirrors fold in, to max speed limit, surely some of them can disable this.
 
I shudder to think what gets reported with my driving a WRX. Hard acceleration? Shit…. 2nd gear is good for 55 mph. I’ve passed others in 2nd. Hard braking? When I drive my wife’s CX-5 it feels like normal braking is inadequate.

Driving the WRX is like compared to driving my wife’s CX-5 was to driving my Scion XD. Turning and curves? When the sign recommends 35 mph for the curve, 70 mph is comfortable.

Not that it makes it any better, but until I get to the point I'm driving around without a phone they're not stealing anything about me that isn't already being stolen.

That sign is just a recommendation!!

Luckily my car is old enough that I don't need to worry about that crap and the next car I want is even older.

You have yearly inspections. Don't think you are out of the loop.
 
You know how WRAL says, “the sensors are indicating wet roads”? That’s because people who have their phones connected are transmitting whether lights are on and what speeds wipers are running. There are articles on the net where they interviewed WRAL and they said they were proud to be a leader in using this technology.

From what I can tell, your phone is the transmitter when you hook up to Bluetooth. I think that if you just use a wireless headset like a trucker and don’t connect to your car, it severely hampers the car’s ability to collect and report data.
